The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation is increasing efforts to raise the comfort level of those in the community hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine. President and CEO Vern Henricks listed a number of community-led efforts going on this week and over the next several days, including some incentives being offered by local businesses and organizations. The Juneteenth Committee will also work with youth aged 12 to 17 Saturday in a back to school vaccine effort, offering a shopping spree incentive to Manhattan Town Center. Advanced voting came to a close Monday for the USD 383 primary. As of noon Monday, Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo says 1,900 Riley County residents took part in early voting. In Pottawatomie County, 13 people living in the district’s boundaries, voted in advance with 40 advance ballots mailed out. Mail ballots can be counted up until Friday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. There are 10 candidates on the ballot, with nine officially campaigning. Voters can select three candidates, with the top six moving on to the November general election.

WICHITA, Kan. — Police in Wichita are investigating separate shootings that happened over the weekend and wounded four people. Police say the first shooting happened Friday night in central Wichita, when a man was shot as he stepped out of his vehicle. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas animal welfare group has created a new program to reduce animal violence in 23 Kansas counties. The project, Cruelty Stoppers, opens the door to care for abused animals that can be linked to domestic violence cases while trying to create better relationships between Topeka police and local shelters, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal. It was developed by the Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation. Bill Acree, the foundation’s new president and CEO, said the project was created because there wasn’t adequate follow-up on cruelty cases. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities are still searching for a swimmer who went missing Saturday at Cheney Reservoir in Kansas. Officials have not released the man’s name, but said they had resumed their search Sunday morning, according to the Wichita Eagle. Officials previously said they were looking for an adult who fell off a boat on the lake. A drowning was reported at 3:30 p.m. near M&M Point Campground, which is along the southeast corner of the lake.

AMERICUS, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas school district plans to offer anti-discrimination training to staff and teachers in response to complaints about how an eighth-grade student was treated after she said she was a lesbian. North Lyon County officials notified the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas that it plans to provide the training, particularly as it relates to the LGBTQ community, The Emporia Gazette reported.
