A 21 year-old white-handed gibbon from the Sunset Zoo passed away on Monday. Dempsey, a male gibbon, was diagnosed with  kidney disease in January of this year. His condition continued to decline and zoo employees worked to make sure he received proper food and medication to help slow the disease’s progression. The Sunset Zoo released a statement about his passing which said,  “On June 10, veterinary staff anesthetized him and transported Dempsey to K-State Veterinary Health Center for further testing. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Dempsey’s kidneys had become nonfunctional. At that time, the difficult decision was made to humanely…

With storm damage in Riley County nearing 10 million dollars, the National Weather Service in Topeka has determined the cause of damage to be straight line winds and not a tornado. Information released Monday indicates some areas of Manhattan experienced straight line wind speeds in the realm of 100 miles per hour, which emergency personnel say rival the wind speeds of an EF1 tornado – minus the rotation. Even so, Riley County Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey says it should still be taken seriously. Riley County Police made an arrest for domestic battery in the early morning hours of Monday. Jesus Manuel Valle was taken into custody after 1 a.m. in the 700 block of Allen Road. He’s accused of numerous charges including domestic battery, criminal trespassing and violation of a protection order. The 30-year-old remains confined in Riley County Jail as of Monday’s RCPD report. Valle has a prior arrest for domestic battery at the same address on his record dating to December 2020 as well.

The Flints Hills Discovery Center hosted the 12th annual state finals for the Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest Friday. After advancing through two regional competitions, seven finalists took the stage to perform all-original poems about the cowboy and ranch lifestyle.  Scott Wiswell, of Valley City, placed first in the serious poetry category. Tim Keane, of Manhattan, also took home a win in the humorous poetry category.
