The USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Board of Education on Wednesday voted unanimously to establish Boys and Girls Club programs at Frank V. Bergman and Ogden elementary schools, the only two without a previous on-site partnership. The two schools had before-and after-school programs before using 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, but ongoing complications including financial problems and low staffing prompted the district to seek an expansion of its agreement with Boys and Girls Club. A number of 4th of July events will be going across the region over the next few days. In Wamego, the famous Boomtown show will be taking place on Jul. 4 with fireworks beginning at 10 pm. Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall and Colorado’s Michael Bennet hosted a field hearing yesterday, highlighting drought concerns in the High Plains. A male subject was airlifted to a Wichita Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a boat prop in the water. Geary County Emergency Management reported on Facebook that emergency vehicles responded to East Rolling Hills at Milford Lake at around noon today to find a male injured in the water. Bystanders on scene treated the subject until emergency personnel arrived. The subject was then flown to a Wichita Hospital by a Lifestar Air Ambulance for further treatment. Pawnee Mental Health announced yesterday that they received a $20,000 grant from the Daniel Keating Foundation (D.K.F.). This grant will enhance and the S.T.A.R.S. Camp experience for young individuals in Manhattan, making it accessible to all regardless of financial circumstances. S.T.A.R.S. (Strength, Teamwork, Attitude, Relationships, Self-Esteem) Camp, run by Pawnee Mental Health is for children aged 5-17 who have severe emotional disturbances (S.E.D.) in our Youth Community Services programming. S.T.A.R.S. Camp is a summer camp with archery, swimming, canoeing, bike riding, arts and crafts, horseback riding, climbing wall, and outdoor exploration.
