Gov. Laura Kelly was in attendance Tuesday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new Manhattan beverage shipping company. Bev-Hub, a Wichita-based beverage canning, labeling and shipping company, has officially opened its doors and is now the home of 37 new jobs. Kelly says the new facility is a great example of economic development in Kansas. Mayor Wynn Butler says the company’s potential for growth and creation of new jobs will benefit Manhattan. Pottawatomie County held a public open house in Westmoreland Monday for the newly constructed Public Works Fleet Maintenance Facility. County commissioners and staff gathered as they commemorated the completion of a project that has been in the works for over five years. The building will replace Public Works’ nearly 85-year-old shop and allow the department to service all county vehicles. Assistant public works director Lance Forgy says the new building is quite the upgrade. Some of the facility’s more visible features are a truck lift an overhead crane, both pieces of equipment that the old shop did not contain. Commissioner…
PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. — A man is dead after an ATV accident in northern Kansas. The accident happened Saturday night. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 64-year-old Terry Gitchel of Phillipsburg was driving the all-terrain vehicle in a pasture in Phillips County when he tried to go up a steep incline. The ATV flipped over backwards. Phillips County is about 60 miles north of Hays.
WICHITA, Kan. — A man has been sentenced to more than 46 years in prison for a 2018 homicide at a west Wichita motel. Prosecutors said in a news release that District Judge Bruce Brown handed down the punishment Monday to 25-year-old Cory Bentley of Wichita. Bentley plead guilty to second-degree murder in May for the shooting death of 43-year-old Jackie Jerome of Wichita. He was shot on Oct. 18, 2018, in the parking lot of the Delux Inn in Wichita. Manhattan city commissioners and officials met late last week at the Anthony Recreation Center to discuss the priorities and implementation of the city’s strategic plan. Part of the discussion was a review of public engagement and feedback efforts, such as online surveys and in-person meetings around town. That was city manager Ron Fehr, who says the city commission was generally pleased with how the strategic plan process has gone so far. The city plans to have a public draft of the plan in late July or early August. This will be followed by another work session with the city commission in late…
Additional work to the exterior of the Riley County courthouse is needed. Recently, a contractor cleaned the exterior walls of the Court House, Carnegie Building and County Office Building. During cleaning of the Courthouse, areas were found which will require more extensive repair or stone replacement. County commissioners toured the exterior of the building along with the contractors and public works on Monday. The majority of the issues are on the exterior of the front entrance area facing Poyntz Avenue. Fort Riley welcomed new senior staff to the 1st Infantry Division on Friday with a Victory with Honors ceremony. 1st Infantry Division Commanding General D.A. Sims welcomed Colonel Geoffrey Norman and Colonel Paul Krattiger to their new positions. Norman took over as the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Big Red One and Krattiger, who has been with the division for some time, took over at the Chief of Staff. Sims says he had only worked with Krattiger for a short time, but knew of his reputation for years and was an easy choice for the position. Norman is new to…
LARNED, Kan. — A 37-year-old man is charged with felony arson after a large American flag was burned outside a Larned business. The Pawnee County Attorney says Jason Wayne Cauble, of Larned, was arrested Tuesday and made his first court appearance on Thursday. Investigators allege Cauble burned a 30-by-20 foot flag outside of Carr Auction and Realty in Larned in April. Cauble remains jailed in lieu of a $15,000. Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett explained that people who burn their own flags are protected by their right to free speech but arson can be charged when the flag belongs to…
