The Kansas Bureau of Investigations is investigating after a man was found dead in a jail cell at the Geary County Detention Center. Junction City Fire/EMS personnel and Geary County Sheriff’s deputies reported to the detention center at about 6 a.m. Wednesday in response to an unresponsive male. The man, who was identified as 41-year-old Allen Presley Harroald of Wichita, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials do not currently believe criminal activity was involved. The Geary County Sheriff’s Office requested that the KBI investigate, per policy.

The Manhattan City Commission approved in a four to one vote Tuesday the first reading of an ordinance meant to extend the face mask mandate to May 16. Commissioner Mark Hatesohl was the lone commissioner to oppose. The passage of the first reading of the ordinance does not mean the mask mandate has been extended. It means that the commission is able to move forward with holding a final vote at its meeting on March 16. TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas legislators are moving quickly to create a low-interest loan program for cities to help them cover a spike in costs associated with providing heat and electricity to residents during last month’s intense cold snap. A state House committee approved a bill Wednesday that would allow the state to loan out $100 million of its idle funds immediately to cities that have community owned electric and natural gas utilities. LAWRENCE, Kan. — The student newspaper editor at Haskell Indian Nations University filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday alleging the university and its president violated the First Amendment rights of the students by retaliating against them for engaging in protected speech and journalistic activities. The lawsuit stems from a directive Haskell’s president, Ronald Graham, sent in October to Jared Nally, editor of The Indian Leader, instructing him not to contact any government agency for information while representing the paper or “attack” any student, faculty member or staff in copy.
WICHITA, Kan. — Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says a 35-year-old deputy who works in the county jail has been arrested during an investigation into contraband brought into the jail. Easter says the investigation began last week after officials got a tip that David Cameron was bringing contraband into the jail. During that investigation, detectives discovered Cameron also was involved in an incident involving neglect of an inmate. WICHITA, Kan. — Police in Wichita say a man has died in an overnight shooting, and homicide detectives are searching for a suspect. Television station KAKE reports that the shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. Officers called to the home where the shooting was reported found a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say the man died from his injuries on the way to the hospital. St. George comprehensive plan Leroy Bailey, Pottawatomie County resident, expressed concern to the county commission Monday over the City of Saint George’s comprehensive plan. He says he is concerned that the plan is going to change zoning designations and increase certain costs. “It looks like a fair plan,” Bailey said. “However, we worry about a thing called taxation. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is holding a shredding event in Manhattan as part of National Consumer Protection Week.
