As Congress continues to look at a reconcilliation measure, one area that could impact Kansas State University would be funding for new or renovated agricultural research facilities at the nation’s land grant schools. Dean of K-State’s College of Agriculture Dr. Ernie Minton tells KMAN the needs are a result of what was a building boom for those facilities in the 50’s and 60’s. Minton tells KMAN one reason the funding is needed is tied to national security. Riley County commissioners approved a request for qualifications for an EMS headquarters building on Thursday. The RFQ includes a study of the current and future space needs for the department for either on site or a new facility. Public Works Director John Ellerman says the current station was built in 1980 and was only meant for part-time shifts. The plan for a possible new facility would be to have space to house up to 10 ambulances. However, that extra space primarily would be meant for possible future purchases. Jurors have found a Manhattan man guilty of all 17 charges against him in a child sex abuse case. On Thursday, a Riley County jury delivered the verdict against 67-year-old Alan Ingwersen, convicting on five counts of rape, four counts of sodomy and eight counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. According to the Manhattan Mercury, Judge Grant Bannister set Ingwersen’s sentencing for December. The charges stemmed from multiple incidents in 2019 and 2020 involving a then 15-year girl.

A first ever five-year strategic plan for the city of Manhattan is the subject of an open house at City Hall Thursday night. Contractor Planning NEXT presented a draft plan to the City Commission last month and Sara Bongiorno notes that draft was influenced by community input from the spring. Bongiorno says the first two rounds of engagement resulted in them gaining input from approximately two thousand residents. In developing a vision statement, Bongiorno says there was a concerted effort to come up with the phrasing of “unparalleled university and military partnerships.” Presenting the draft plan to the City Commission…
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas, man has been charged with murder and domestic battery in the shooting death of his older brother. Police say 34-year-old Ricky Salazar was arrested last week and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Ricardo Salazar. He also faces separate charges of aggravated robbery, being a criminal in possession of a weapon and cocaine possession. Police say the older brother was shot on Aug. 15 in an area along State Avenue and died of his injuries on Sept. 23. Ricky Salazar was being held Tuesday in the Wyandotte County Jail…
TOPEKA, Kan. — Police in Topeka are investigating a suspicious death. Police say in a news release that officers were called shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday to the North Topeka East neighborhood near the riverfront to check on the welfare of a person. Arriving officers found a person unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced the person dead a short time later. Police did not release the person’s identity or give any details about the death, other than to say the death is considered suspicious and is being investigated.
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Students gathered Tuesday at college campuses in Missouri and Kansas to protest sexual assaults. The Kansas City Star reports that a demonstration at the University of Missouri’s flagship campus in Columbia drew a crowd of at least 100 people. Another 40 protested at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In Kansas, about two dozen people gathered outside of Strong Hall at the University of Kansas. WICHITA, Kan. — A woman who was shot and wounded by police at a Wichita grocery store has been released from the hospital and taken to jail. The Wichita Eagle reports that 31-year-old Danielle Robinson of Salina was booked Tuesday on three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated robbery. Wichita police Capt. Jason Stephens said two officers were dispatched Monday night to a Whole Foods store in response to reports of a woman with a gun.
