Manhattan City Commissioners agreed to publish a high-end of 3.5 for a mill levy increase ahead of a pair of 2022 budget hearings in September. Earlier this summer, the commission had agreed to publish a potential mill levy increase of 5.079. Mayor Wynn Butler was emphatic at the time that he would not agree with that much of an increase, and reiterated it Tuesday night. City staff was recommending the higher number in an effort to restore services and staffing that have been cut over the past few years. Many years of service at Kansas State University are coming to an end for university president Richard Myers. Earlier this year, the former four star general in the U.S. Air Force announced his intent to retire in December 2021. Myers has served as the president of the university since 2016 as well as filling in other roles as well, such as the professor of military history and leadership. After roughly 18 months of closure, the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art is opening their doors again! Executive Director at the Beach Museum, Linda Duke, tells KMAN while having the online option was great and something they plan to continue, she is excited to have the Beach Museum open again. Duke says they have many new exhibits that she is excited about and exhibits that encompass their main goal of diversity. AUGUSTA, Kan. — A man wounded in a police shooting near Wichita has been booked into jail on probation violations. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 49-year-old Barrye Lightner, of Augusta, was taken Sunday night from Wesley Medical Center to the Sedgwick County jail. He was shot Friday night after Augusta police received a strange 911 call in which no one said anything but didn’t hang up. Police tracked the call to a convenience store, where the caller said there was a man inside with felony warrants for his arrest. The officer entered the store…
TOPEKA, Kan. — Police in Topeka say a 2-month-old infant who was in the back of a car when it was stolen has been found safe. Police say the incident happened late Monday morning, when the vehicle was reported stolen near 6th and Clay streets. Police say the vehicle was found a short time later with the baby still inside and unharmed. A few hours later, police arrested a 47-year-old Topeka man on suspicion of robbery, vehicle burglary, kidnapping and child endangerment.

Enrollment numbers at Kansas State University continue to be affected due to COVID. Richard Myers, K-State President, tells KMAN that they consider three different buckets when looking at enrollment. They look at applications, admissions, and enrollments. “Our apply and admits are the highest ever in the schools history,” Myers says. “This year, the yield, the number of those that are admitted that actually enroll, I think has been impacted by COVID.” Myers adds that students decide to come to K-State by coming to campus, seeing the campus, and meeting the people, but due to COVID-19, there has been limited opportunities…
