MISSION, Kansas — A federal freeze on most evictions that was enacted last year is scheduled to expire Saturday, after the Biden administration extended the original date by a month. The moratorium put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September has been the only tool keeping millions of tenants in their homes. EMPORIA, Kan. — A former maintenance manager at the Tyson Foods plant in Emporia has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for defrauding the company out of more than $416,000. David John Ranger was sentenced Wednesday. He pleaded guilty in April to one count of wire fraud. He was also ordered to pay $410,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release when he finishes his jail term. Prosecutors say Ranger used company cards and created a fictitious company in a scheme to pay personal expenses for nearly seven years.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Supreme Court says a man who beat an Ottawa woman and then left her to die does not have to register as a sex offender. Korrey Raine White Rinke was sentenced in December 2019 to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 25 years for the 2016 death of Julianna Pappas of Overland Park. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender. On Friday, the state Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling and said Rinke did not have to register as a sex offender. Kansas State University will require masks to be worn indoors on university property, starting Monday. The mandate comes after CDC recommendations this week for universal masking of all teachers, staff, students and visitors regardless of vaccination status. All three university campuses fall within counties considered to have substantial or high transmission. Lafene Health Center continues to offer COVID-19 vaccines. The changes are a result of the rapid rise in cases due to the delta variant, which is much more transmissible than previous strains of the COVID-19 virus.

The 83rd session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas is set to take place next week on the K-State campus. Boys state aims to expose high school students to an interactive experience during which they learn about government, leadership and civic responsibility. While the event is normally restricted to boys who have completed their junior year of high school, Boys State of Kansas executive director Tom Wierman says this year’s session will be different. USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Schools has announced that effective Friday face masks will be required in all buildings again, no matter anyone’s vaccination status. The announcement comes after the Centers for Disease Control issued guidance this week for areas where coronavirus spread has been at a high rate over the past few weeks. Central registration is coming up Saturday at Manhattan High’s West Campus and the district will require masks for anyone entering the building. Earlier this week, Riley County’s Health Department noted the two week positivity rate for coronavirus is at 8.83 percent.
