The Sunset Zoo is bringing back its Wine in the Wild fundraiser after the event was canceled in 2020. Sunset Zoo official Melissa Kirkwood says Wine in the Wild is scheduled for August 14 and, while VIP tickets are sold out, General Admission tickets are still available. Another Sunset Zoo event, Brew at the Zoo, has undergone a date change. Kirkwood says it is now scheduled for October 15. Brew at the Zoo tickets will go on sale in mid-August. Signups are underway for volunteers to pick up furniture ahead of Manhattan’s Furniture Amnesty Day on Friday. People looking to donate furniture for the day can sign up before the end of Wednesday to be placed on the list of stops volunteers will be making for pick ups. The event returns after a hiatus last year, according to Manhattan Fire’s Assistant Chief of Risk Reduction, Ryan Courtright. He says the 2019 amnesty day was a record setter. WICHITA, Kan. — Maintenance work affected 911 emergency call service in two Kansas counties over the weekend. Sedgwick County officials said Sunday that callers to 911 in the Wichita area heard a recording instead of reaching a live dispatcher overnight Saturday, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many calls were affected. Officials said Shawnee County’s 911 call center in Topeka was also affected. Sedgwick County said the outage was caused by work AT&T was doing on its phone system that wasn’t supposed to cause problems for the emergency call centers. NEWTON, Kan. — Authorities have identified two people killed in the crash of a passenger van near Newton that also injured five others. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 35-year-old Stephanie Manyseng and 43-year-old Rudy Perez-Marcial, both of Wichita, died in the Saturday morning crash. Investigators say the crash occurred when the 16-passenger van carrying seven people went off Interstate 135 between two bridges, down an embankment and hit a bridge pillar. MISSION, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a wrong-way driver on Interstate 35 caused a head-on collision that killed him and the driver of the pickup truck he hit. The patrol says the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the Kansas City suburb of Mission when a pickup traveling south in the northbound lanes of the interstate hit another pickup head-on. Investigators say 23-year-old Sam Wilson, of Greenwood, Missouri, was driving the wrong-way vehicle and died at the scene. The annual Flush Picnic Chicken Dinner took place Sunday as hundreds showed up for an evening of food, games, raffles, auctions and fellowship to benefit the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church parish. Despite the pandemic scaling the event back to a drive-thru-based format last year, 2021 saw a big return with both a drive-thru and traditional dinner taking place. The Riley County Fair continued Sunday with a mixed-berry pie baking contest. Ten pies were entered into the competition with Pete Delnero taking second place and Jonah, Lilla, and Melissa Wanklyn snagging the first place prize. County Commission Chair John Ford was one of the celebrity pie judges and spoke about the Wanklyn’s champion triple berry pie, his favorite of the day. Technology continues to change the face of emergency response for first responders, including in Riley County. RCPD Director Dennis Buttler on KMAN’s In Focus Friday noted one new app that can help alert dispatchers to someone in trouble. Called “What 3 Words”, the app’s developers have assigned three unique words to every 10-foot square on maps worldwide. He says the app gives dispatchers info even if the caller can’t speak.
