TOPEKA, Kan. — Some employees at Kansas hospitals spent a good part of the Christmas holiday caring for patients and providing comfort to families and colleagues. Like other people, the coronavirus pandemic upended holiday plans and family traditions, but COVID-19 has stressed Kansas hospitals. Steve Morgan had an eight-hour shift as the chaplain on duty in a Wichita hospital and reflected on what he sees as colleagues’ sense of purpose on the Christian celebration of Jesus’ birth. Nurse Yvonne Murphy was feeling hopeful during her 12-hour Christmas hospital shift in Topeka after getting a coronavirus vaccine. The holiday came near…

LAWRENCE, Kan. — One northeast Kansas county is moving jury trials to a building on its fairgrounds to allow for better social distancing amid the pandemic. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the plan is for jury trials in Douglas County to resume Jan. 11 at the Flory Meeting Hall. The space is big enough that the 14 chairs of the jury box can be distanced from one another. Witnesses who testify will wear plastic face shields instead of masks so that jurors can see their faces, but so that there will still be protection from respiratory droplets.
Those concerned about the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine likely don’t have much to worry about. Ascension Via Christi president Bob Copple says many people are only experiencing a little discomfort in the area of the injection. He tells KMAN specifically about an individual at the hospital who recently got the vaccine. “They were talking about a little shoulder soreness, talking with one of our physicians as he was getting on the elevator and actually said that it hurt less than when he got his flu shot,” Copple said. He says this reaction has been fairly consistent for those…
While the idea of putting in a bridge in a bridge on Junietta Road near Oliver Brown Elementary School has been around for a while, it likely won’t come to fruition anytime soon. Speaking on KMAN’s In Focus Dec. 22, Pottawatomie County commissioner Pat Weixelman said that it’s largely a matter of how it could be funded. “That’s something we’re going to have to address in the next year or two to try to come up with some funding and make this thing a little more toward reality. As of now there just isn’t any funding available for it,” he…
As the new year approaches, the Riley County Seniors Service Center is optimistic as it slowly and safely begins a return to some in person activities. Director Jami Ramsey was excited to announce recently that starting in January, the center will reopen its dining room to 20 guests at a time, requiring a reservation and signing in along with temperature checks. “Because our dining room is fairly large, we’re able to spread everybody. But it doesn’t feel cold. They can see other folks and there can at least be some feeling of engaging in some socialization,” she said. Many of…
