Riley County Health Department officials confirmed two additional COVID-19 related deaths in the latest weekly report, bringing the total pandemic death toll for the county to 55. According to Wednesday’s report, one individual was a 32 year old woman who died 10 days after testing positive. Her vaccination status has not been verified. The other was a 66-year-old fully vaccinated man who died two weeks after testing positive. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) Fire officials in suburban Kansas City who responded to a condominium kitchen fire say a woman and her dog were found dead inside the unit. The fire occurred Tuesday afternoon, when Overland Park fire crews responded to a call around 3:20 p.m. of a fire along Outlook Drive. Overland Park Fire spokesman Jason Rhodes says arriving fighters found smoke coming from a two-story condo and quickly put out the kitchen fire. The woman was found dead in the front room of the home. Officials identified her as 51-year-old Julie Ann Peterson.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Only three of 16 projects financed with STAR bonds are meeting requirements for bringing visitors and spending to Kansas, and it could still take decades for them to return the tax revenue diverted for the bonds, according to a new state audit. Sales Tax and Revenue Bonds allow municipalities to issue bonds for developments, which are then supposed to pay off the bonds through sales tax revenue generated by bringing in tourists from other states to visit. Ascension Via Christi has updated some of its visitation measures. The Manhattan hospital announced this week that labor and delivery patients will be allowed two people during labor. Patients having a Caesarean section will be allowed one support person during the procedure. After delivery one support person will be permitted to stay throughout mom and baby’s stay. Elsewhere, patients undergoing outpatient procedures or testing (including same-day surgeries, Cath Lab or GI/Endoscopy procedures) will be allowed one visitor during their care. The director of Kansas State University’s A.Q. Miller School of Journalism has officially announced his retirement at the end of the school year. Dr. Steven Smethers publicly announced his decision Monday as part of KMAN’s In Focus. White Canyon residents met with Riley County commissioners Monday to discuss road improvements in the area. Residents are requesting to set up a benefit district for the county to improve Baldwin Park Road, with the residents sharing the costs of maintenance.  Resident Dana Nayduch says part of the road before the area is a county road. Residents are asking for improvements to Ramp and Main Roads to have access to Baldwin Park.  The benefit district for the road would encompass around 3,400 feet, with estimates at around 147 thousand dollars.
