Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office responded to two vehicle related incidents. The Sheriff’s Office responded to the 9700 block of Lavender Lane, in Manhattan on November 27th for a vehicle burglary. Several items were removed from the vehicle including the victim’s debit card. The stolen debit card was used at the Short Stop gas station on South Port Drive the next day around 2:45 am. Camera footage shows a silver car was seen in the area. BELLE PLAINE, Kan. (AP) – An obituary for an 81-year-old Kansas man who died of COVID-19 is garnering attention. Dr. Marvin James Farr of Scott City died Tuesday in isolation at a nursing home. His son, Courtney Farr, wrote an obituary lamenting how his father died in a world where many of his fellow citizens refuse to wear a mask to protect one another. A bipartisan letter of support has been signed by a number of Kansas legislators including several from the Manhattan area to curb the spread of COVID-19. Sen. Tom Hawk (D-Manhattan), along with Representatives Sydney Carlin (D-Manhattan), Tom Phillips (R-Manhattan), Suzi Carlson (R-Clay Center) and Lonnie Clark (R-Junction City) joined 58 others from the House and State Senate calling for action late last week. The holiday tradition of lighting up Manhattan continued this Friday as the 19th annual Mayor’s Spirit of Holidays Lighted Parade brought hundreds of people out for a little Christmas cheer while still socially distancing. The parade acts as an opportunity to raise awareness of the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Instead of bringing gifts to the parade, supporters were asked to contribute food or money directly to the Breadbasket this year. A second arrest has been made in connection to an ongoing rape investigation involving a minor. Riley County Police on Friday charged 19-year-old Zelond Benymon, Fort Riley in connection to three counts of rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy. Police filed an initial report Nov. 24 after a 12-year-old victim came forward to police. Benymon is jailed on a $350,000 bond. Earlier this week police charged 23-year-old Tavian Garrett of Manhattan with five counts of rape and five counts of aggravated criminal sodomy in connection to the investigation. TOPEKA, Kan. — Two northeast Kansas counties have rejected at least part of the new federal and state guidelines for shortening the time people are quarantined after they’re possibly exposed to COVID-19. The new guidance says people with no symptoms can end their quarantines after 10 days instead of 14 or after seven days with a negative COVID-19 test. Public health officials in Wyandotte County announced Thursday that they’re sticking with 14-day quarantines, arguing that shorter quarantines risks greater spread of the virus. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — An Australian company has purchased the Kansas-based financial services company Waddell & Reed Financial for $1.7 billion. Macquarie Asset Management, an arm of Australia’s Macquarie Group, announced late Wednesday that it will buy all outstanding shares of Waddell and Reed for $25 per share in cash. The companies said in a statement that when the sale is complete, Macquarie plans to sell Waddell & Reed’s wealth management platform to LPL Financial Holdings, an independent broker-dealer in Boston for $300 million.
