An arrest warrant affidavit released by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office details what led to the arrest of a former Manhattan Parks and Recreation employee, charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The document, obtained by News Radio KMAN Tuesday, alleges 31-year-old Zach Bayless, a former Recreation Supervisor, downloaded and shared a lewd video of a young girl in “stages of undress” on a messaging app called Kik. The rehabilitation project for the stilling basin below Tuttle Creek Dam is nearing completion, with it being given back to control of the Army Corps of Engineers Operations team at the lake. Operations Project Manager Brian McNulty tells KMAN the project included closure of an old drain that helped cause a sinkhole. Public access remains closed and there won’t be a full-reopening for a while. The east side of Outlet Park will remain shut down. Eight employees from the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) recently joined more than 1,400 other U.S. Department of Agriculture employees across the country to assist in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s COVID-19 vaccination effort. According to a release from USDA Friday, some employees helped with operational tasks associated with clinics, others assisted with vaccination experience like NBAF’s highly-trained veterinarians administering shots. NBAF personnel were deployed to several locations from New England to Oregon and even Oklahoma. Potential new equipment for officers The Riley County Police Department is looking at purchasing new firearm-flashlight attachments and holsters for its officers. According to RCPD director Dennis Butler, data shows about 90 percent of all officer-involved shootings occur in low-light situations. He says having a firearm with a flashlight attached to it instead of having two separate tools allows the officer to better focus on what is in front of them. WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities in south-central Kansas seized 89 marijuana plants and several bags of the plant during the recent search of a property northeast of El Dorado. The Butler County Sheriff’s office said the 56 pounds of marijuana worth roughly $180,000 was seized during the search on Thursday as part of an investigation of a marijuana growing operation on the property. No arrests were reported immediately after the search, but the sheriff’s office said charges are expected soon in the case.

WICHITA, Kan. — A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of another teen in Wichita. Police said officers discovered a 16-year-old with gunshot wounds shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday when they were responding to a reported burglary at a home in north Wichita. That teen was taken to a Wichita hospital where he died. His name wasn’t immediately released. After a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds, police arrested that 16-year-old after learning there had been a fight between those two men and the victim before the shooting.

NEWTON, Kan. — An elderly Kansas couple died after their vehicle collided with a semi on Interstate-135 about two miles south of Newton. The Kansas Highway Patrol said Raymond Bina, 71 and his wife, Denice Bina, 65 both died in the Saturday afternoon crash. The Highway Patrol said the Lincoln MKZ that Denice Bina was driving left the highway and crossed into the median around 1:50 p.m. Saturday. The car then overcorrected and crossed into the northbound lanes where it collided with a semitrailer truck. The 25-year-old Udall man who was driving the semi was not hurt in the crash.

WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities in south-central Kansas say a 15-year-girl drowned in a private swimming pool over the weekend. Officials say the drowning happened Friday night at a home in Harvey County. First responders were called to the home around 9:30 p.m. Officials say the girl was swimming alone in the pool when she drowned. Others in the home found the girl in the pool and called 911. Medics who arrived on the scene performed CPR and rushed her to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The girl’s name has not been released.
