WICHITA, Kan. — A convicted Kansas killer has been charged with another homicide just months after he was released on parole. The Wichita Eagle reports that 39-year-old Ahmad Khaasanouva Bey was charged Tuesday in Sedgwick County District Court with first-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Melinda Sprague, whom police said he had dated. Bey is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Another suspect, 34-year-old Vanessa Lynne Waner, is charged with interference with law enforcement. Her body was found Dec. 26 in an abandoned vehicle, two days after she was reported missing.

Ascension Via Christi hospital welcomed Hudson Mattis Cox as the first baby born in Manhattan in 2020 Wednesday morning. Hudson Mattis Cox was born at 2:10 a.m. to Derek and Bethany Cox and weighed eight pounds. Bethany says that while the due date was January 10th, they knew there was a possibility Hudson could be born around New Years Day. Leading up to Hudson’s birth, Bethany says they began to gradually realize he could be the first baby born in Manhattan in 2020. The Riley County Law Board has approved an increase in salary and benefits for Riley County Police Department Director Dennis Butler. Butler’s annual salary and benefits were raised from a total value of about $150,000 to about $157,000 as part of an annual performance review. The decision came after a private meeting between Butler and members of the Law Board that lasted for over an hour. During the meeting, Manhattan Mayor and Law Board Chair Mike Dodson shared his appreciation for the work Butler has done. Budget adjustments and end-of-year transfers The Pottawatomie County Commission approved a series of budget adjustments and end-of-year transfers during their meeting Monday. Funds were transferred to the accounts of various departments from an “unclassified” account in order to make up for exceeded budgets.
