TOPEKA, Kan. — A 21-year-old Topeka woman is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a teenager. Shawnee County authorities charged Daisha Butler on Thursday in the death of 17-year-old Nevaeh Martinez. She was shot July 3 outside a Topeka home, and died the next day after being taken off life support. Butler is being held on $1 million bond. The victim’s mother, Tiana Cannon, told KSNT that her daughter didn’t know Butler and was an innocent bystander in the shooting.

WICHITA, Kan. — A $2.1 million federal grant awarded to Wichita State University for new aerospace research facilities is expected to create nearly 500 jobs over the next 10 years. The Wichita Eagle reports that the U.S. Commerce Department announced the grant to the school’s National Institute for Aviation Research on Thursday. The money will be matched with university funds generated by the institute’s contracts with private industry and will go toward a new flight test research center and a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility. TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Supreme Court has blocked a man’s attempt to withdraw his guilty pleas after he was sentenced to serve at least 50 years in prison over the July 2018 murders of a woman and her cousin. The high court on Friday rejected Matthew Douglas Hutto’s claim that his court-appointed attorney’s advice to plead guilty to two premeditated first-degree murder charges meant that the lawyer did not adequately represent him. Demolition of the former First Christian Church property has been delayed due to possible historic status. The county recently received a letter from the Kansas Historical Society of an inquiry into the historic status of the building. County Counselor Clancy Holeman says a hearing is set for August 7. Holeman says if the site is designated historic, the commission would need permission to make any changes or damage to the structure. Riley County commissioners reviewed a draft presentation for the proposed 0.2 sales tax Thursday. The presentation served as an informational tool regarding what the tax would cover.  Included in the presentation was current projects using the current sales tax, what will be included in future projects, and why to use sales tax. The sales tax is proposed for projects in areas of Riley County outside of Manhattan and would be used to generate funds for road and bridge replacements and repairs. July is National Parks and Recreation Month and the Manhattan City Commission recognized the city’s department at Tuesday night’s meeting. After the proclamation honoring the city’s Parks and Rec department, Director Eddie Eastes noted how the importance of activities in communities nationwide are perceived. The third of the city’s recreation centers to be built with Quality of Life sales tax funding is scheduled to open later this summer. The Eisenhower Center is the last of the group to open.

The Flint Hills Discovery Center is celebrating Christmas in July on Saturday, which will include an appearance from Santa Claus himself. Event Supervisor Jonathan Mertz spoke with KMAN about some of the activities surrounding festivities.
