Students in Manhattan-Ogden Schools will stay in the hybrid classroom mode for the immediate future. The school board discussed maintaining Hybrid versus other modes of instruction, and formally held no vote. This follows announcements earlier this week, that students at all Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 schools will go into a full-distance learning format on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 allowing for deep-cleaning of facilities. Laura Kelly issued a new mask mandate Wednesday in hopes of lessening the spread of the coronavirus in Kansas after the state again reported another record seven-day increase in new cases. State law still allows Kansas’ 105 counties to opt out of such an order from the Democratic governor, and most did when Kelly issued a similar order in July. Aggieville and City Park parking restrictions The Manhattan City Commission Tuesday discussed adding parking restrictions in Aggieville, City Park and nearby neighborhoods. The move is in response to what will be a sizable decrease in available parking stalls during 2021 due to the construction of a parking garage near the N. Manhattan Ave./Laramie St. intersection. Potential restrictions include three-hour parking limits during weekdays, no overnight parking and a new residential parking color zone. Riley County is reporting 56 new positive COVID-19 cases and 175 recoveries since Monday. This brings the county’s total number of active cases to 432 and recoveries to 2,597. The percent positive rate in Riley County for the week of Nov. 8 came in at 18.6 percent, down slightly from the previous week’s rate of 19.2 percent. Ascension Via Christi Hospital is currently caring for seven COVID-19 positive patients and two persons under investigation (PUI). Kansas officials say the state can’t help at least half of the struggling small businesses seeking relief because of the coronavirus pandemic. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly called Monday for additional federal aid as the state reported another record for new coronavirus cases. Kelly and state Commerce Secretary David Toland announced that Kansas awarded grants to nearly 2,000 small businesses to help them cover operating costs. Her office said the grants totaled $37.5 million, and Toland said the state hopes to award another $20 million to an additional 1,000 businesses. Pawnee Mental Health continues to help those struggling after losing a loved one to suicide. Robbin Cole, Pawnee Mental Health Executive Director tells KMAN that November 21st is National Survivor of Suicide Loss Day. This day is for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. She says they hold an event each year that features a showing of a documentary featuring interviews with those who have lost loved ones due to suicide. Increasing COVID-19 cases numbers and calls for mask wearing Local health administrators spoke to the Pottawatomie County Commission Monday about the urgency of the local COVID-19 situation and the need for increased mask wearing. Steve Land, Wamego Health Center administrator, says that increased hospitalizations and the inability to transfer patients to other hospitals is currently one of the biggest concerns in healthcare. “If we can’t help get this under control, it’s not just the COVID patients that we’re trying to transfer, it’s the patients that have the MI or the stroke,” Land said.
