WICHITA, Kan. — Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead outside a Wichita sports stadium where a youth football game was being played. Wichita police say the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday inside the Stryker Sports Complex near a parking lot, but outside the stadium where the game was being played. Officers called to the scene for a report of a disturbance heard several gunshots and saw people leaving the scene. Police say a man injured in the shooting was taken to a hospital, where he died. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Federal prosecutors say a 54-year-old man made holes in drywall to enter an Overland Park pawn shop and steal 22 firearms. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release that Darrin Taylor, who was homeless, was indicted Wednesday on one count of theft from a federally licensed firearms dealer. The weapons were taken in September from the Penguin Pawn & Gun shop in Overland Park. MISSION, Kan. — Kansas’ coronavirus positivity rate has topped 20%, even as one GOP lawmaker pushed back against Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s call for a statewide mask mandate. Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle said Thursday that a “one-size-fits-all COVID solution doesn’t work for our diverse state.“ More than 90 of the state’s 105 counties have opted out of the mask order. A Riley County Police Department Corrections Officer has been arrested after a reported domestic battery. On Monday, around 5 p.m., a 28-year old female reported a known 33-year-old male battered her to the RCPD. Officers arrested Ace Thompson, of Manhattan on Wednesday on the offenses of domestic battery and criminal restraint. Thompson was issued a total bond of $1,500. He posted bond and is no longer confined in the Riley County jail. To protect the privacy of the victim, additional information is not being released. Thompson has been placed on administrative leave as per RCPD policy.

$3.5 million loan-application The Manhattan City Commission Tuesday authorized a loan application with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for $3.5 million to finance the Wastewater Treatment Plant Lime Sludge Lagoon Improvement project. The goal of the project is to bring lime-sludge lagoons that are part of the stormwater drainage system in  northeast Manhattan in compliance with state and federal policies. Riley County health officials reported 39 new positive COVID-19 cases Wednesday along with 41 added to the recovered list. Just one COVID positive patient is receiving care at Ascension Via Christi. Active cases totaled 71 with just over 2,000 now recovered from the virus and 11 deaths. The health department has now received all of the results from the 277 people who took advantage of free COVID testing last week in Manhattan. A total of 15 were positive. Additional free testing events are being planned in November and December. The health department is currently monitoring eight active outbreaks in Riley…
