Members of the Manhattan Fire Department are beginning their annual fire hydrant maintenance program this week. Firefighters will spend the next several months flowing and painting hydrants across the city. Flowing is performed annually to ensure proper operation and to flush out water lines. It sometimes can cause yellow or rust-colored water in your home, so firefighters recommend if this happens, to run water in a bathtub or shower for a few minutes until it clears up. Wingstop’s CEO has donated 10.2 million dollars to Kansas State University for student well being initiatives. Charlie Morrison and his wife Debbie are creating the Morrison Center for Student Well-being with this investment. The new center will oversee all aspects of student well-being campus wide. Riley County is reporting 17 positive COVID cases and 29 recoveries since last week, for a total of 28 active cases. The percent of positive cases for the week of April 11 was 1 %. It’s the 12th consecutive week in Riley County has been below 5%. A total of 14,712 Riley County residents are fully vaccinated and 6,179 have received at least their first dose. TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it has begun an investigation into the death of an inmate at the women’s prison in Topeka. Television station KSNT reports that 35-year-old Jessica Chapman died Monday at the Kansas Department of Corrections’ TCF women’s prison. The station initially confirmed the death through the KBI, because the Kansas prisons system did not send out a news release announcing the death. LAWRENCE, Kan. — Lawrence will no longer allow minors to undergo conversion therapy designed to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The city commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to prohibit licensed providers from practicing the therapy in Lawrence. Commissioners said research on conversion therapy shows it is harmful to children’s mental health and increases the risk of suicide. After some religious leaders previously raised concerns, commissioners noted the ordinance is aimed only at licensed providers, not clergy or religious figures who provide counseling without a license.
ROELAND PARK, Kan. — Prosecutors in suburban Kansas City, Kansas, have filed charges against a man in the fatal stabbing 36 years ago of another man. The Kansas City Star says prosecutors announced the developments in the cold case Tuesday, charging 65-year-old Geter Rhymes with first-degree murder in the 1985 stabbing death of 29-year-old Gary Watson. Watson’s body was found on March 13, 1985, in his apartment in Roeland Park. Police at the time said three men were seen entering Watson’s apartment about two hours before his body was discovered. Riley County commissioners furthered their discussions on possible changes to the Law Board appointment process during their meeting Monday. Before discussions began, the commission heard from Dr. Lorenza Lockett during public comment, as he represented the Coalition for Equal Justice. Lockett was there to follow up on three asks for the county and city commissions during previous meetings. “We believe the city and the county to work together and we request a joint meeting.
