Schmidt’s kickoff Tuesday came after weeks of heightened visibility for the three-term Republican because of the GOP-controlled Legislature’s debates over Democratic Gov. TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas health officials say the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continue to drop in the state while vaccination efforts are expanding. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported 590 new cases between Friday and Monday, raising the state’s total since the pandemic began to 296,451. Four news deaths were recorded, bringing the total to 4,816. About 16% of the state’s residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine since vaccinations began. More than 698,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered as of Monday. Of those, nearly 233,000 have received second doses.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City police are investigating the shooting death of a 32-year-old man. Police say officers were called to an apartment Sunday evening. Sgt. Lana Urteaga says officers found Victor Cabrera suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He died later at a Wichita hospital. No suspect information has been released and the investigation is continuing, police said.

WICHITA, Kan. — A 32-year-old man is in custody after a child died in a hit-and-run in Wichita. Police arrested Marcus Downey Monday on potential charges of felony hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license. The 4-year-old boy was struck by a pickup truck when he and his mother were crossing a street in downtown Wichita Monday morning. He died at a Wichita hospital. Capt. Wendell Nicholson said the truck fled the scene but was found about 100 yards away. The boy’s mother was not injured.

WICHITA, Kan. — Police in Wichita say an investigation into a weekend shooting has shown that a man shot two people including one who later died before turning the gun on himself. The shooting happened Saturday night, when police were called to an area for reports of a shooting. Arriving officers found 20-year-old Christopher Terrell and a 16-year-old boy with gunshot wounds, as well as the shooting suspect, 26-year-old DeAdrian Johnson, with a gunshot wound. All three were taken to hospitals, where Terrell died of his injuries. Police say Johnson remains hospitalized in critical condition, and is under arrest in…

The remains of former Pilsen, Kansas, resident, Korean War Medal of Honor recipient and Army chaplain Capt. Emil Joseph Kapaun have been identified. Kapaun’s remains were accounted for in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii, through Phase Two of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s Korean War Disinterment Project. After Kapaun died while in a North Korean prison camp in 1951, POWs buried his body in the encampment’s cemetery. WICHITA, Kan. — Much of Kansas will likely see higher electric bills as a result of February’s deep freeze while utility customers in the Kansas City area could get refunds. The difference has to do with how two different divisions of utility giant Evergy fared during the brutal cold. The company’s Kansas Central division had to spend an additional $100 million to buy power. Meanwhile, Evergy’s Metro Division that serves the Kansas City area was able to generate $60 million in extra revenue because it was able to generate surplus power and sell it to other utilities.
