A California man arrested for smuggling drugs into Kansas has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison. U.S. District Attorney Stephen McAllister said Thursday that 45-year-old Eduardo Garcia-Patino was sentenced to 164 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Garcia-Patino was stopped for a traffic violation in the eastbound lanes of I-70 in Geary County in 2017. Investigators found a red duffel bag in his truck containing 23 pounds of methamphetamine. A 24-year-old former Fort Riley soldier described as a Satanist by prosecutors has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. Jarrett William Smith was sentenced Wednesday for distributing information through social media about building a bomb and making napalm. Smith also has been linked to a neo-Nazi group by the Anti-Defamation League. A federal judge denied a request by Smith’s attorney for a more lenient sentence of 15 months. TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas death toll from the coronavirus pandemic rose to 411 as public health officials reported six more deaths. The state Department of Health and Environment also reported Wednesday on its website that Kansas had another 723 confirmed and probable cases since Monday, an increase of 2%, for a total of 35,890. The actual number of cases is thought to be far higher because people can be infected without feeling ill and because of a lack of testing, particularly early in the pandemic. LAWRENCE, Kan. — A Kansas prosecutor has ruled that law enforcement were justified in fatally shooting a man linked to two Nebraska killings. Douglas County, Kansas, District Attorney Charles Branson announced his findings Tuesday after reviewing the deadly June 15 shooting of 31-year-old Nicholas Hirsh. Authorities have said they believed Hirsh had been in Kansas since June 12 when a car was stolen from Clay Center. The Marshals Service was helping to look for the vehicle when the Kansas Highway Patrol spotted it near Perry Lake in northeast Kansas. Manhattan Tuesday unanimously approved its 2021 budget, featuring a flat mill levy and no salary increases for city employees. Read about the prior budget discussion here. Though approved to the tune of about $166 million — a $3 million increase due to additional sales tax revenue earmarked for the new middle school recreation centers — reductions will be necessary in the ’21 budget to cover a $2.7 million revenue shortfall. Manhattan administrative indicated the hole would be plugged with $1.5 million in budget reductions and $1.2 million in transfers from multiple city accounts.
