As students return to Kansas State University, health officials expect some uptick in COVID-19 cases. Riley County Wednesday reported 6 new positive COVID tests and 17 recoveries since Monday. That brings the active case count to 115. 369 recoveries, 12 probable cases and 5 deaths of 489 confirmed cases have also been reported since March. Currently, 2 positive patients are hospitalized, 1 on a ventilator. Pottawatomie County reported 1 new test and no new recoveries since Monday. Manhattan will not immediately pursue a city-specific emergency resolution amid the COVID-19 pandemic after a testy-at-times discussion by city commissioners. A majority of city commissioners previously expressed interest in discussing the resolution, though three of the five representatives Tuesday voiced opposition to the idea following a briefing by City Attorney Katie Jackson and conversation among the board. Budget hearing and reopening discussion The USD 320 Wamego Board of Education will hold a budget hearing during its meeting Monday. Tim Winter, USD 320 Wamego superintendent, says as far as the tax levy goes, not much will change. “Our mill rate is essentially staying flat, but it actually dropped almost two-tenths of a mill,” Winter said. “So a very, very slight decrease in our taxes to our patrons.” The board will also discuss the school district’s reopening plan during the meeting. MCCUNE, Kan. — Authorities are investigating the discovery of decomposed human remains in rural southeast Kansas. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that someone found the remains Monday while out on a walk. The release said the identity of the person and the cause of death aren’t known. The sheriff’s office has asked the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to assist with the case.

SALINA, Kan. — Authorities say a beaten body found 34 years ago in a Kansas creek has been identified as a Los Angeles woman. Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said Tuesday that the woman, long referred to as “Mrs. Molly,” was Robin Ann Green. She was last seen in December 1985 after visiting family members in Minnesota. Her body was found one month later in Mulberry Creek along Interstate 70. Her grave was exhumed last summer for DNA testing. Soldan said the case remains an open homicide investigation. Investigators don’t know how she came to Kansas.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Police have made an arrested in the death of a Topeka woman who was killed by a stray bullet as she stood in her front yard. The shooting happened late the night of Aug. 5 as 62-year-old Jerrie Lyn Ross was in her yard. The Capital-Journal reports that 29-year-old Tony Reece Dante Baird was arrested late Tuesday. He faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and the reckless criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle.
