By AJ Dome/Manhattan Mercury The Kansas wheat harvest is fully underway, and ag producers are trying to finish cuttings after recent storms brought interruptions. The wheat harvest across the state is about 30% complete, according to officials from the Kansas Wheat Commission. This time last year saw only 6% harvest completion, while the average for the week ending June 16 is 8% complete. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service rated winter wheat conditions at 25% poor to very poor, 36% fair and 39% good to excellent. It’s expected to heat back up in the listening area over the next couple of days and into the weekend. Temperatures are expected to touch the mid-to-upper 90s over the weekend, with highs of 96 on Saturday and 94 on Sunday in Manhattan. The Little Apple could see triple digits at the start of next week as well, with highs of 101 and 100 on Monday and Tuesday. The Flint Hills Regional Council and the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization are partnering to apply for the 2024 Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program, a grant from the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant will cover two different projects. Set for June 22 and put on by K-State Research and Extension Master Gardeners, the tour will feature five home gardens, two community gardens and the K-State gardens. Riley County Police are searching for a suspect following a hit-and-run overnight that seriously injured a male pedestrian. Officers responded after 2:00 am in the 1100 block of Fremont finding a 41-year-old male following a hit-and-run crash. The victim was transported to Via Christi with serious injuries. His identity is unknown at this time. Officers are asking anyone with information on the suspect or the vehicle to either contact Crime Stoppers or toll-free at 1-800-TIPS.
