A layout of the new elementary school for Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 was presented to the board of education Wednesday night. Bob Faires with Alloy Architects was joined by Clint Hibbs with BG Consultants to present the plans to the board.  The presentation included the building layout as well as generated pictures of the exterior.  Faires says the size of the school will be about 70 thousand square feet. MANHATTAN — Celebrations abound this weekend with commencement activities at Kansas State University and at Manhattan High School. The Class of 2019 at K-State is the 152nd to graduate with more than 3,250 students candidates for degrees. Manhattan High School’s graduation is taking place at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bramlage Coliseum. Approximately 396 students will be graduating. This is the 105th MHS graduation ceremony. Graduate degrees are being awarded Friday on the K-State campus, starting at 1 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum. MANHATTAN — Classes in the Manhattan-Ogden school district may be wrapping up by the end of May, but opportunities for kids to get meals will continue into the summer. The USD 383 summer meal project offers free meals to those aged 1 through 18 starting June 3. Board of Education Member Leah Fliter spoke about the program on Wednesday’s edition of KMAN’s In Focus. Two Kansas City-based companies working on the Hale Library restoration have been cited by OSHA under the Department of Labor for not complying with asbestos removal standards. Custom Crushing & Company was cited for 23 health violations, including failure to educate workers on asbestos hazards or provide protective clothing and respiratory protection to employees. They face a proposed penalty of $193,000. Belfor Property Restoration was cited for three violations, including failure to inform the University and library employees of the location and quantity of material believed to contain asbestos. TOPEKA — Kansas educators are looking for ways to respond to what some are calling a vaping epidemic in the state’s schools. The officials told the Board of Education Tuesday the number of students vaping using electronic cigarettes increased by 80 percent between 2017 and 2018. The Kansas News Service reports vaping nearly always involves nicotine, which is addictive, and uses flavors that appeal to younger smokers. The Centers for Disease Control says not enough research has been done to determine the health consequences of vaping. WILLIAMSBURG — Authorities say four people died in two separate crashes in the same northeast Kansas county. A Texas woman and her two children died around 9 a.m. Tuesday about 4 miles (6.44 kilometers) north of the Williamsburg exit on Interstate 35 in Franklin County. Fox4kc reports the Franklin County Sheriff’s office said a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Brieyori McGowan went off the interstate, over-corrected, crossed a median and hit a vehicle in the opposite lane. LIBERTY — A Kansas City, Missouri, man has been charged with fatally shooting another man, dismembering his body and then setting the remains on fire. Thirty-year-old Colton Stock was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and three other felonies in the death of 35-year-old Matthew Calkins, of Gardner, Kansas. No attorney is listed for him in online court records. Bond is set at $1 million cash only.
