A Riley County Police Department Corrections Officer has been arrested after a reported domestic battery. On Monday, around 5 p.m., a 28-year old female reported a known 33-year-old male battered her to the RCPD. Officers arrested Ace Thompson, of Manhattan on Wednesday on the offenses of domestic battery and criminal restraint. Thompson was issued a total bond of $1,500. He posted bond and is no longer confined in the Riley County jail. To protect the privacy of the victim, additional information is not being released. Thompson has been placed on administrative leave as per RCPD policy.
$3.5 million loan-application The Manhattan City Commission Tuesday authorized a loan application with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for $3.5 million to finance the Wastewater Treatment Plant Lime Sludge Lagoon Improvement project. The goal of the project is to bring lime-sludge lagoons that are part of the stormwater drainage system in northeast Manhattan in compliance with state and federal policies. Riley County health officials reported 39 new positive COVID-19 cases Wednesday along with 41 added to the recovered list. Just one COVID positive patient is receiving care at Ascension Via Christi. Active cases totaled 71 with just over 2,000 now recovered from the virus and 11 deaths. The health department has now received all of the results from the 277 people who took advantage of free COVID testing last week in Manhattan. A total of 15 were positive. A new mural of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is now complete in downtown Manhattan. Two Manhattan women led the charge in the development of the new for the late justice, who passed away last month. The mural is a tribute to Ginsburg’s contributions to justice and gender equality and a celebration of Americans coming together to strengthen their communities. Local artist Taylor Carr and Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice representative Jessica Kerr, are the two women behind the project. October is breast cancer awareness month, and the Johnson Cancer Research Center is continuing to raise awareness with Fighting For a Cure Day and the Pink Power Luncheon. TOPEKA, Kan. — A draft plan shows that health care workers and long-term care residents will be among those who will get the coronavirus vaccine first in Kansas. The Kansas City Star reports that Kansas’ 45-page plan was filed in the past week with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Other groups that will be prioritized for the initial rounds of vaccinations include people with underlying medical conditions, people 65 and older and essential workers. TOPEKA, Kan. — An independent police auditor says a Topeka police officer who forcefully handcuffed a 14-year-old youth with autism did not violate any police department policies. But the auditor, Edward Collazo, is recommending the officer take a refresher course in de-escalation training. He said the officer might have followed policy but didn’t necessarily show good judgment during the encounter with the youth on Sept. 19. TOPEKA, Kan. — A 59-year-old man who prosecutors say threatened Wichita’s mayor because he was upset about a mask mandate has been charged. Meredith Dowty, of Wichita, was charged Tuesday with three counts of criminal threat. The retired firefighter is accused of threatening to kidnap and kill Mayor Brandon Whipple over his role in requiring masks in Wichita in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Police say the suspect sent text messages to a city official threatening Whipple’s life. The charges come a day after Kansas Gov. TOPEKA, Kan. — Police in Topeka are investigating the city’s latest homicide after finding a man fatally stabbed at a home. Police say officers were called to the home around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a fight. Arriving officers found a man with stab wounds at the home. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police have not yet released the victim’s name, and no arrests have been reported in the case. Police are asking anyone with information on the stabbing to contact detectives or Shawnee County Crime Stoppers.
