TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas has recorded another record spike in cases. The state saw an average of 736 new cases for the seven days ending Monday, or 9.8% higher than the previous record of 671 set for the seven days ending Friday. Since Friday, the state added 2,055 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases, an increase of 3.1%, to bring the total for the pandemic to 67,862. The number of COVID-19-related deaths increased by eight to 771. Riley County is reporting 23 new positive COVID-19 cases and 29 recoveries since Friday. This brings the total number of active cases in Riley County to 132 and recoveries to 1,827. People in the 18 to 24-year-old age range represent 52 percent of the new cases and about 77 percent of the total number of cases in Riley County. Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Junction City on I-70 at Washington St. early Sunday morning following a rollover accident. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Anthony E. Barnard, 23, of Junction City, was driving eastbound on I-70 in a 2006 Ford-150 when he fell asleep. The pick-up truck veered into the median, struck the guard rail and went back into the driving lane. Barnard then over corrected and struck the median again, leading to the truck overturning. Riley County police are investigating a report of shots fired that occurred in Manhattan Sunday evening. Officers responded to the area of 10th St. and Pottawatomie Court on Sunday at about 8:30 p.m. where they discovered a vehicle had been shot. No one was hurt in the incident. RCPD officials are not releasing any further details. Officials are asking those with information about the incident to contact Riley County Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777.

Senator Jerry Moran visited Pawnee Mental Health Services on Friday to present a $832,505 grant for telemedicine services. The grant is being provide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of their Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grants program.  Moran says there is a challenge to provide mental health services throughout the state.  This is due to not only a lack of professionals, but also the distance for more rural areas. “But distance can be overcome, and the one of the ways it can is through technology,” says Moran. The Manhattan Public Library continues to expand their online resources. Maddy Ogle, Manhattan Library Development and Public Relations Coordinator, tells KMAN that they have started a new program called Brain Fuse. Ogle says there are several different sections of the program and she explains one section called HelpNow. “It’s live tutoring sessions that you can go in, the kids can submit their questions and someone will actually connect with them. Kansas State University recently received a $350,000 competitive grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support pollution prevention. The grant continues the university’s Pollution Prevention Institute partnerships with Kansas companies and government entities in pollution prevention efforts. It funds a 10-week internship program for students to get hands-on experience with small businesses and provide recommendations on how to lessen their environmental impact. Pollution prevention specialist Lynelle Ladd says in a release that they’ll help hundreds of businesses with such efforts and help save companies thousands of dollars.
