WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities say a shooting at a Wichita apartment complex has left one person dead. KAKE reports that the shooting happened around 1 p.m. Monday at the complex in the southern part of the city. Police Capt. Wendell Nicholson said the victim is a man in his late 40s to early 50s. TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas has recorded another record spike in cases. The state saw an average of 736 new cases for the seven days ending Monday, or 9.8% higher than the previous record of 671 set for the seven days ending Friday. Since Friday, the state added 2,055 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases, an increase of 3.1%, to bring the total for the pandemic to 67,862. The number of COVID-19-related deaths increased by eight to 771. Riley County is reporting 23 new positive COVID-19 cases and 29 recoveries since Friday. This brings the total number of active cases in Riley County to 132 and recoveries to 1,827. Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Junction City on I-70 at Washington St. early Sunday morning following a rollover accident. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Anthony E. Barnard, 23, of Junction City, was driving eastbound on I-70 in a 2006 Ford-150 when he fell asleep. The pick-up truck veered into the median, struck the guard rail and went back into the driving lane. Barnard then over corrected and struck the median again, leading to the truck overturning. Riley County police are investigating a report of shots fired that occurred in Manhattan Sunday evening. Officers responded to the area of 10th St. and Pottawatomie Court on Sunday at about 8:30 p.m. where they discovered a vehicle had been shot. No one was hurt in the incident. Senator Jerry Moran visited Pawnee Mental Health Services on Friday to present a $832,505 grant for telemedicine services. The grant is being provide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of their Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grants program. Moran says there is a challenge to provide mental health services throughout the state. This is due to not only a lack of professionals, but also the distance for more rural areas. “But distance can be overcome, and the one of the ways it can is through technology,” says Moran.
