The Dusty Bookshelf and the K-State English Department have partnered to put on what they are calling the Satellite Transcribe-athon, which is part of a nationwide effort to digitize about 16,000 documents related to the women’s-movement of the early 1900s. The effort was launched by the Library of Congress earlier this year in honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which legalized voting for women in the United States. KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas, police say a badly burned body was found inside a barrel near a cemetery. Police spokesman Jonathon Westbrook says the body of a man was found Wednesday after a passerby told police a human limb was sticking out of the barrel. Westbrook said it appeared someone tried to burn the body but it was recognizable. The person has not been identified. The case is being investigated as a homicide. Police think the body was at the site for less than a day.
STOCKTON, Kan. — A Plainville man has been convicted of killing his wife in March 2018. A Rooks County jury found 37-year-old Alifonso Eduardo Garcia guilty of first-degree murder on Wednesday. His wife, 24-year-old Alexis Garcia, was found dead in their Plainville home. Officials have not said how she died. Garcia’s sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 17.
An inmate who escaped from the Lansing Correctional Facility in January has been sentenced to 10 more years in prison. Cal Henry Green was sentenced Wednesday for aggravated escape from custody, theft and burglary of a motor vehicle. Authorities say Green was on a work assignment when he took a state-owned dump truck and left the prison without permission. He was arrested three days later in Independence, Missouri. Green is serving a prison sentence for an aggravated battery charge from Wyandotte County.

Manhattan is considering upgrades to City Park’s Larry Norvell Bandshell, prompted by a local businessman’s financial involvement. Phil Howe, founder of KS State Bank, approached the city about improving the Arts in the Park venue’s seating and accessibility in 2018 and funded initial designs through Anderson Knight Architects based on ideas gathered from a K-State design contest. A former Manhattan City commissioner and Mayor has filed to be a candidate for the Riley County commission 2020 election. John Matta filed for the District 3 seat, currently held by incumbent Commissioner Ron Wells, on Tuesday. He says since he has recently retired, he wants to get back into public service. The Riley County Health Department has been continuing its accreditation process with a new director in placer. Health Department Director Julie Gibbs has now been in her new role for over a month. She made her first appearance on KMAN’s In Focus Tuesday. While there has been so much effort going into this accreditation process, Gibbs explains what it will ultimately mean for the department moving forward.
