BELLEVILLE — Authorities say four children have been killed in a Thanksgiving Day crash in Kansas. Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner said in a tweet that the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. when a vehicle went off the side of a road and into a pond in Republic County, near the state’s northern border with Nebraska. The children who died were all under the age of 8. Their names weren’t immediately released. In its eighth year at Old Chicago, Manhattan’s annual community Thanksgiving lunch brings out regulars and fresh faces alike. TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court says a Sedgwick County man’s convictions shouldn’t be automatically reversed because the judge fell asleep during the first day of trial. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the states highest court rejected on Wednesday a legal interpretation by the lower Kansas Court of Appeals that had granted Daquantrius Johnson a new trial on firearms charges. Justice Caleb Stegall wrote in the court’s opinion that there was no precedent in Kansas to justify a finding of structural error simply because a judge catnapped during a trial. KANSAS CITY — Fire department crews have evacuated an area near an industrial plant after a tractor-trailer crashed into a liquid oxygen unit in the Fairfax district of Kansas City, Kansas. The Kansas City Star reports that the crash occurred just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Fire crews immediately started evacuation efforts after liquid oxygen began to leak out of containers. Police say the truck driver had a medical episode which led to the crash. The driver is hospitalized and in stable condition. The fire department said shortly before 5:15 p.m. the oxygen leak was shut off.

Manhattan is one of the most inclusive cities to LGBTQ folks in Kansas, according to the Human Rights Campaign. The HRC annually publishes a municipal equality index (MEI) that rates more than 500 cities on a variety of criteria ranging from non-discrimination protections, policies and services. Two plaintiffs in Title IX lawsuits against Kansas State University dismissed their federal suits Tuesday. The dismissal was filed by the plaintiffs Tuesday and the case was dismissed with prejudice. The courts had previously denied a motion to dismiss by the K-State legal team in March. The two students alleged K-State administrative officials violated Title IX by failing to take reasonable action to investigate two rapes reported at off-campus fraternity houses.  Jared Gihring was sentenced to nearly 13 years in 2017 for one of those crimes. For the first time in about 19 years, Pottawatomie County has a sheriff not named Greg Riat. Undersheriff Shane Jager was selected by Republican Party precinct leaders last night to be the new sheriff in a 19-7 vote over Wamego Police Chief Mike Baker. “It’s a great honor and pleasure,” Jager said. “We have a great community, a great county. Manhattan City Commissioners are keen to keep 12th Street between Bluemont and Moro two-way as discussions surrounding potential Aggieville redevelopment continue. The Commission Tuesday voiced majority support for the proposal amid a discussion on plans for multiple projects around the district that could include streetscape and water infrastructure renovations, district-wide public WiFi and a new parking garage next to Rally House.
