The Riley County Health Department is reporting 13 new positive COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday. This brings the county’s numbers to 116 active cases, 336 recoveries and five deaths. Ascension Via Christi Hospital has one COVID-19 positive patient who is not on a ventilator and one person under investigation. As part of its data analysis, RCHD will begin tracking COVID-19 probable cases. A Manhattan man was arrested Wednesday night after attempting to escape RCPD. 38-year-old James Watkins of Manhattan was taken into custody by Riley County police around 8:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of Fairchild Avenue. Watkins is accused of criminal property damage and fleeing from police. He was issued a $3,000 bond and is no longer held in the Riley County Jail. Motorists at Fort Riley will need to adjust their routes. The base plans to close the Trooper gate temporarily as it begins on a construction project at the Trooper Access Control Point. It closes Friday at 7 p.m. and will remain so until the project wraps by the end of September. In its place, Fort Riley will reopen Henry Drive. Additionally, the Grant Access Control Point will be open 24/7 throughout the construction starting Friday. Manhattan Tuesday unanimously passed a 1st reading of its 2021 budget featuring a flat mill levy. The full budget amounts more than $166 million, up about $3 million due to about half a million dollars in property valuation increases — to be in-part directed to the city’s bond and interest fund and to fully fund the approved RCPD budget — and sales taxes collections earmarked for Manhattan’s new two voter-approved middle school recreation centers. The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter will host its third annual Clear the Shelters adoption event this Saturday. A number of animals will be available for adoption during this event for a discounted fee of $25. “We have 66 cats and 19 dogs that need homes,” Deb Watkins, T. Moving on in District 3 on the Republican side is John Matta who defeated incumbent Ron Wells receiving 57 percent of the vote. The final tally was Matta with 1,345 to Wells’ 996 votes.
