Travis Altenhofen announced he will be resigning from his position as Chair of the Pottawatomie County Commission and representative of district three during a meeting this morning. The Cats never trailed in the game and scored after Jonathan Alexander blocked a TCU punt and started the drive at the TCU 20-yard line. After a loss of one, the very next play off of the play-action pass, Skylar Thompson hit tight end Nick Lenners for a 21-yard touchdown. It was the first touchdown by a Wildcat tight end since Zach Trujillo in 2014. SALINA, Kan. (AP) — Officials say an African lion that died at the Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina suffered from encephalitis caused by a fungal infection. The lion, called Sahar, died Sept. 27. Zoo officials announced Thursday that a necropsy performed at Kansas State University found the infection caused lesions on the lion’s brain and a lung. It said Sahar had no outward signs of illness until the day before his death. The fungus is not contagious. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas trial-court judge opposed by an influential anti-abortion group is among three finalists to fill a vacancy on the state’s highest court. A state nominating commission on Friday named Shawnee County District Judge Evelyn Wilson as a potential appointee for Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly to consider. Kelly’s appointee will go on the court without any review by the Republican-controlled Legislature. Kansans for Life announced its opposition this week to her candidacy, citing her husband’s political contributions to Kelly and other abortion-rights supporters. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A study has determined that Kansas schools are relying too heavily on test scores rather than teacher comments when deciding if changes are needed in an individual student’s education. KCUR-FM reports that University of Kansas researchers argue student assessments in the state should be data-driven rather than data-dependent in determining if a deviation from the established curriculum is required. The study released earlier this year calls for a balanced system that includes teacher recommendations, test scores and other metrics. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Wichita lawyer who stole more than $900,000 from an elderly client with dementia was sentenced to probation. Larry Toomey was given two years of probation, with an underlying sentence of 26 months, on Friday. He pleaded guilty in April to felony theft. The Wichita Eagle reports Toomey’s attorney, Steven Mank, told the court Toomey was entitled to the money because of a gift memo drafted by the 104-year-old client. Prosecutors say Toomey spent nearly $962,000 from the woman’s bank accounts, including for a gambling addiction. Under his sentence, Toomey was ordered to be evaluated for a…

The ceremony occurred six months after an initial wall-breaking ceremony and included a word or two from Robbin Cole, the exective director for PMHS; Laura Howard, the secretary for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services; Wayne Sloan, CEO for BHS Construction and PMHS Foundation Board member; and Bruce Johnson, the manager for the Crisis Stabilization Center.
