WELLINGTON, Kan. — Police say the suspect in a shooting death in Wellington turned himself into authorities. Twenty-one-year-old Walter Edward Taylor III, of Wellington, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. Wellington police chief Tracy Heath says Taylor is a suspect in the death of 34-year-old Travis Schneider, also of Wellington. Heath says Taylor was a passenger in a car driving next to a truck driven by Schneider Wednesday in Wellington. The two men got into an argument and Taylor fired one shot, which hit Schneider, who died at the scene. Taylor was arrested after he turned himself in. Heath…

OVERLAND PARK, Kan — A 26-year-old Kansas man is charged with battery of a law enforcement officer during a protest against racism and police violence in Overland Park. Darrien Richmond, of Shawnee, was charged Saturday and was released on $2,500 bail. Overland Park spokesman Sean Reilly said Richmond caused scrapes and bruises on an officer’s hands during the protest. Reilly did not have details about how the officer was injured. Organizers of the protest say Richmond was running to protect his wife when he was arrested. Richmond was one of four people arrested after a protest involving about 30 people.…

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Lawrence City Commission on Saturday outlined the goal as part of the city’s new strategic plan. The Kansas Department of Agriculture is asking the public to report receipt of any unsolicited packages of seeds. The KDA has been notified that several Kansas residents have received unsolicited packages containing seeds that appear to have originated from China. The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time. The packages were sent by mail; some have been labeled as jewelry and they may have Chinese writing on them. The death involved a 96-year-old woman who was a resident of Leonardville Nursing Home. The woman died on June 26 after testing positive for COVID-19 on June 10, although she was not showing symptoms at the time of the test. KDHE notified the health department and the Office of Vital Statistics classified her cause of death as COVID-19. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 school board voted to push back the school start date to Aug 26. The vote came during a special meeting due to the state school board’s rejection of the governor’s school delay order. The original calendar approved by the board in March had a start date of Aug 12.
