While still years from becoming a reality, plans for renovations of the eroding Manhattan Regional Airport runway have run into a potential snag over its width. Airport Director Jesse Romo says though past communications with Federal Aviation Administration officials indicated they would be eligible to receive federal grants to help fund up to 90 percent of the runway costs at its current 150 foot width, just this month they received a letter stating they are only eligible for funding for a 100 foot wide runway. A date for a preliminary hearing has been set for Manhattan restaurant owner Robert Iacobellis, who is currently facing 130 charges of sex-related crimes. The hearing will take place over the course of two days, going from 10 a.m. til 5 p.m. on January 9th and from 9 a.m. til 5 p.m. on January 10th. Iacobellis’s defense team, currently made up of two attorneys, will be in court on December 3rd at 1 p.m. for a status hearing as they claim they haven’t received all of the information they need in order to do their job. K-State clinical professor of equine medicine and surgery Laurie Beard was on Monday’s In Focus to discuss a few different illnesses that can affect horses. One illness she discussed recently made its way through several states. “It’s a disease called vesicular stomatitis, or VS, you might see it abbreviated,” Beard said. “It causes ulcers in horses’ mouths and on coronary bands. It started this summer down southwest (and) moved its way up to Colorado. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A cold front that froze much of Kansas set at least six records for low temperatures. The National Weather Service reports Wichita, Salina, Russell, Dodge City, Garden City and Medicine Lodge set low temperature records early Tuesday. The lowest temperature was in Garden City, which dropped to minus 1, breaking the record of 7 set in 2018. The highest temperature of the six cities was 8 in Wichita, which breaking the former record of 9. Wichita, Salina, Dodge City and Medicine Lodge broke records set in 1911. A newly elected Manhattan City Commissioner entered a plea deal Tuesday in his DUI case dating back to April, 2019. Commissioner-elect Aaron Estabrook pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor in Riley County District Court before Judge John Bosch. Estabrook will serve 48 hours in jail followed by 120 hours of house arrest scheduled for a later date in addition to performing 20 hours of community service. Estabrook was arrested for the DUI, his second offense, on April 15 after leaving Coco Bolos in Manhattan. Estabrook said in court he has since quit alcohol completely and voluntarily completed an outpatient substance abuse…
WAMEGO, Kan. — A 109-year-old World War Two veteran has accepted Polly Ogden Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s most distinguished award. Julia Kabance, the eldest member the Prairie Band Pottawatomie Nation and currently the oldest Native American WWII veteran, received the DAR Distinguished Citizen Medal at the Good Samaritan Society – Valley Vista nursing home in Wamego Monday for her many years serving in the military and volunteering in VA hospitals and churches. The Manhattan Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore has recently moved to a new location. Outreach Coordinator Melody Sexton spoke with KMAN saying they have moved their store to 514 Pillsbury Drive. Sexton says their website says what they are currently accepting for donations. They are not accepting anything considered “soft goods”, such as mattresses, clothing, and anything broken. They also won’t accept anything that people wouldn’t buy. The Manhattan Parks and Recreation officially opened the ice rink at City Park on Monday for the season. Aquatics Specialist Sydni Baker spoke with KMAN saying they will kick off the season after the Veterans Day Parade. Baker says some of the special events included an ugly sweater skate in December, skate with Santa, and even a groundhog skating event. The rink will also be offering skating lessons in January and February. Baker also spoke last week about some of the ways people can use the rink for events.
