WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a Wichita homeowner shot and wounded a suspected burglar after finding her inside his home with several other people. The Wichita Eagle reports that that the woman was taken to a hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries after the Tuesday afternoon shooting in the western part of the city. Wichita police Lt. Joe Kennedy says a homeowner fired one shot after arriving at his house and finding four or five people inside. Members of the Fairy Godmothers organization were on Monday’s In Focus to talk about their relatively new Hand Up Grant, or HUG. This grant, which can amount up to $3,000, is given to women 18-years-old or older living in Manhattan or Riley County wanting to attend Manhattan Area Technical College, Bellus Academy, Manhattan Christian College or K-State Global Campus and need financial assistance to do so. Women wanting to apply for the Hand Up Grant will need to do so through the Shepherd’s Crossing. “You will be screened financially there,” Judy Regehr, a member of the Fairy Godmothers organization, said.…
An Oklahoma football fan died after suffering an apparent heart attack at Saturday’s game against Kansas State. David Adams, director of Riley County emergency services, said paramedics were called to the stadium for a patient experiencing chest pain, and the fan collapsed after they arrived. He was treated at the scene and taken to a Manhattan hospital across the street from the stadium, where he was pronounced dead. The man was reportedly seated with friends and family at Bill Snyder Family Stadium when he collapsed. His name has not been released.

A lack of volunteer firefighters for Riley County could lead to the closure of one of the stations. Emergency Management Director and Fire District 1 Chief Pat Collins spoke to the Riley County commission on Monday on the state of the Peach Grove Fire Station. He says two of the three active volunteers from that station recently told him they were leaving. Flu Vaccine Shortage Residents of Pottawatomie County wanting to get a flu vaccine through the county’s health department may have to wait a little while. Pottawatomie County Health Director Lisa Kenworthy told the Pottawatomie County Commission during their meeting Monday morning that the county currently has a shortage of flu vaccines, but they are not the only ones. “It (the flu vaccine) goes to the CDC after it’s been manufactured,” Kenworthy said. “The CDC, after their testing, then releases the lots and once those lots — numbers are released, then they distribute it. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Police say they are investigating a fatal shooting near an office center in Overland Park. Overland Park Police Department spokesman John Lacy says police responded to the shooting at Deer Creek Office Center at about 8:45 a.m. Monday. The Kansas City Star reports that the victim was in his 60s and worked in one of the businesses in the office park. He has not been identified publicly. Police were investigating the death as a homicide No suspect information has been released.
