NEWMAN — Authorities say two people have been killed and two injured in a northeast Kansas crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that the crash happened Saturday night in Jefferson County when a driver lost control on a curve and went off the side of Kansas 237. The pickup truck then overturned several times. The patrol says the crash killed two passengers 46-year-old Christopher Webb, of Topeka, and 21-year-old Luke Puccinelli, of Oskaloosa. The driver and another passenger were taken to a Topeka hospital with injuries that were believed to be serious.

WICHITA — Authorities say strong winds caused about 140 rail cars from two trains to derail over the weekend in central Kansas. The Wichita Eagle reports that the derailments happened late Saturday near Walton. The National Weather Service says the rail cars were all empty and many were double stacked. No injuries were reported. Wind gusts at a nearby airport in Newton measured as high as high 67 mph around the time of the derailment.

WICHITA — A missing Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy is believed to be in Turkey. Sheriff Jeff Easter says Homeland Security was able to confirm that Deputy Derick Chandler flew to Istanbul. KAKE-TV reports Chandler Chandler is implicated in an investigation in Wellington of a sex crime involving a 13-year-old. On Monday, a deputy found Chandler’s gun, badge, identification and armor in the back of his patrol car. He hadn’t been on duty for about a week. Officers filed a report for motor vehicle theft in the 500 block of Stone Pointe Dr. in Manhattan on August 15, 2019, at approximately 8:30 AM. Officers listed 29-year-old male as the victim when he reported an unknown suspect took his 2007 Grey Nissan Altima. The estimated total loss is not listed but is expected to be over $500.00. Part of College Avenue north of Marlatt will be closed to through traffic starting Monday during construction by Riley County Public Works. The structure replacement project is located on the stretch of College between Marion Avenue and Livestock Units Road. County crews will be removing two culverts and replacing them with a 12 by 4 by 30 reinforced box culvert. Weather permitting, work should be complete by the end of next week.

The Riley County Police Department will be starting a new campaign to better help deliver mental health services to the community. RCPD Director Dennis Butler told the Riley County commissioners on Thursday that the One Mind campaign is a pledge to deliver this service for the next one to three years. The campaign includes reaching benchmarks on training a certain percentage of their patrol officers and crisis intervention team. The Manhattan Public Library hosted its first ever Check Out and Chill Out event to celebrate the first day of school Wednesday. The event saw kids receiving a free snow cone when they checked out a book. Public Relations and Development Coordinator Maddie Ogle says the event aimed to springboard more people to sign up for a library card. The library partnered with Manhattan Special Olympics.
