The Riley County Police Department is making sure those in Aggieville are staying safe with numerous reports of fights recently in the area. RCPD Director Dennis Butler says he recently went down to Aggieville in civilian clothing to observe the patrons and officers. “I wanted to have a firsthand perspective and watch my officers interact with the community. I thought they were patient and very helpful to citizens being friendly and interactive and citizens who needed help,” Butler said. New fixed route stops at all routes in Manhattan began Monday in Manhattan and Ogden and will be fare free now through Aug. 10. Executive Director Ann Smith says they have taken feedback from the community for these new additions. “One of the biggest things we heard was that people were having to make too many transfers and needed more direct routes. WICHITA — A Wichita man has pleaded guilty to threatening workers of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. The Wichita Eagle reports that 22-year-old Christopher Thompson entered a plea Monday in which he admitted making the threats in three phone calls to Operation Rescue on Aug. 14. Thompson was originally indicted on four counts of transmitting threats through interstate communication. Prosecutors say he threatened in phone calls and voicemails to kill and rape Operation Rescue employees, murder their family members, sexually assault their daughters and that the devil was going to rape them. TOPEKA — A Kansas state senator is back with the Republican party after leaving it to join independent Greg Orman’s campaign for governor. The Wichita Eagle reports Sen. John Doll, of Garden City, changed his party affiliation a few weeks ago. He had been an independent since March 2018, when he became Orman’s running mate in their unsuccessful bid for the governor’s office. Doll lost all his committee assignments after he became an independent under a Senate rule that strips senators of committee spots if they change parties. SOLOMON — The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.1 magnitude earthquake has rattled central Kansas. The quake was reported around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday about 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) southwest of the town of Solomon. No damage has been reported. Scientists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0. The Kansas Geological Survey says two other earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3 have been reported this month in the state. They include a 3.2 magnitude quake on July 1 and a 3.7 magnitude quake on July 5. Both of those were in Rooks County.

SALINA — Authorities have exhumed a woman’s remains that were found more than 30 years ago in a shallow creek near Salina. The Saline County sheriff’s office says in a Facebook post that the reason for unearthing her remains Monday was to obtain a DNA sample that might help law enforcement identify her. The woman, who has been nicknamed “Miss Molly,” was found face down in January 1986 in Mulberry Creek near Interstate 70. The Riley County Commission is moving forward with its 2020 budget. The 2020 budget was approved for publication on July 11. It was accepted Monday with a mill levy of 43.065 mills, a 2.148 mill increase over last year’s. On a recent trip to speak to the president’s cabinet, a Pottawatomie County commissioner was able to meet with President Donald Trump. Commissioner Dee McKee was in DC last week to talk to the president’s cabinet on how local issue are impacted by rules and regulations from the federal government.
