A Manhattan engineer who pleaded no contest to attempted voluntary manslaughter and was found guilty of criminal property damage apologized before being sentenced to 50 months in prison Monday in Riley County District Court. Mark Harrison pleaded to the charge in June following a hung jury in a February trial in which he was initially charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. He was arrested following a 2018 standoff in which he shot RCPD Sgt. Pat Tiede and an armored vehicle that two officers were sitting within. For the 11th year, residents of Manhattan were able to pass forward their unwanted furniture to those looking to complement their current sets at Furniture Amnesty Day and organizers say it looked to be bigger than ever. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss plans to retire in December, giving Gov. Laura Kelly a second appointment on the court. Nuss announced Friday that he plans to step down Dec. 17 after serving on the court since 2002 and as chief justice since 2010. He was an appointee of Gov. Bill Graves. During the 66-year-old Nuss’ tenure as chief justice, the seven-member court came under increasing criticism from conservative Republicans for rulings that overturned death sentences in capital murder cases and directed legislators to increase spending on public schools. On a public health advisory warning since June 27, officials initiated a project to treat the Milford Gathering Pond in Geary County for a harmful algal bloom Tuesday, July 23. According to a release by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, they began using a hydrogen peroxide-based algaecide to investigate and demonstrate in-lake treatments for control of cyanobacteria — often called blue-green algae. The department says peroxide-based algaecides can provide rapid treatment of blooms and samples will be collected before and after application to evaluate its performance. The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 board of education approved their 2019-20 budget for publication on Wednesday. The board held a special meeting to give them enough time approve the budget, send it to publication, and then hold the public hearing. The budget will be out in publication on Friday. The projected mill levy is 62.12 mills, a 5.33 increase from last year. The increase is due to the recent bond passage last fall, which was projected to raise the mill levy 7.77 mills. Without the bond, the mill levy would have actually decreased 2.45 mills. The original projection in the bond…
KANSAS CITY — A Kansas man who raped, killed and dismembered a 16-year-old girl and beat an 80-year-old woman to death is among the first five federal death-row inmates scheduled for execution when the federal government resumes executions. The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday announced it planned to resume execution of federal inmates for the first time since 2003. Wesley Ira Purkey is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13. The Kansas City Star reports that Purkey, of Lansing, killed Jennifer Long in January 1998 after picking her up in Kansas City, Missouri. He dumped her dismembered and burned body…
