Highway K-13 between Riley and Pottawatomie Counties over Tuttle Creek dam will be opening again next week. The roadway was closed in February 2018 for a project replacing the bridge deck over the spillway structure, it will open again Monday, June 10th. Pedestrian and non-motorized traffic will be prohibited on or along K-13 as well as between Dyer Road and Tuttle Cove Road due to safety concerns. OVERLAND PARK — Four people are accused of using counterfeit $100 bills on shopping sprees across the Kansas City area. Prosecutors say the four were caught after Overland Park Marriott Hotel employee reported seeing them throwing trash away in containers that weren’t near their rooms. Prosecutors say the suspects were trying to dispose of evidence after they altered $1 bills to look like $100 bills. TOPEKA –Two Republican leaders say they have doubts that the Kansas Senate will confirm Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s choice to be the next head of the state prison system. Kelly on Wednesday stood by her appointment of top Idaho corrections official Jefferey Zmuda as Kansas corrections secretary. Zmuda is set to take over the Kansas Department of Corrections in July. LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is paying a former student-athlete $40,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming she became ill because of mold in the vents of her dormitory room. The Lawrence Journal-World report s the university denies the claims but agreed to pay Laine Evans $20,000 and her attorneys $20,000 to settle the lawsuit. The agreement released Tuesday says the university and Evans used mediation in the case to avoid the expense and uncertainty of litigation. Officers responded to the report of an injury accident near K-82 and Timber Creek Rd in Riley County on June 5, 2019, at approximately 2:10 PM. When officers arrived on scene, they found a Red Ford F150 driven by Jennifer Hicks, 33, of Clay Center, had crashed. Hicks and three passengers were transported for treatment of their injuries. A man died after suffering an apparent medical episode driving on Tuttle Creek Boulevard Wednesday. The 56-year-old driver was not identified in a release by Riley County police. He was driving a 2018 Ford Escape when he left the roadway and crashed into a pole near mile marker 303, south of Madison Road on TCB in the 10 o’clock hour. The man was transported to Via Christi hospital where he was declared dead. The cause is still under investigation.
Manhattan residents will vote in November whether to increase sales tax by 0.3 percent. The Manhattan City Commission voted unanimously to send the question to the public at its Tuesday meeting. Such an increase would bring Manhattan’s sales tax rate from 8.95 percent to 9.25 percent, sending the city into the top 10 of 25 total first class cities in terms of sales tax. Those areas with self-imposed sales tax increases such as transportation development districts or community improvement districts would have varying higher rates.
