OLATHE — Jurors have awarded more than $2 million to a Missouri man who was injured when a driver threw a tractor-trailer in reverse on Interstate 35 in Kansas. The Kansas City Star reports that Michael Whitt, of the Kansas City suburb of Riverside, Missouri, was headed to his office in nearby Lenexa, Kansas, during a July 2015 thunderstorm when he saw the rig’s taillights. This year’s Riley County Fair will be short a couple of longstanding events. The parade and Blue Valley Pork Producer’s barbecue that normally took place on the first night of the fair will not happen this year, according to Riley County Extension Director Gary Fike, who stopped by KMAN’s In Focus. Fike explains why the decision was made on the parade. The number of independent pork producers has decreased over the past few years, which has made the barbecue hard to continue. Even though the two events won’t take place this year, Fike says there’s no shortage of activities for…

With the intense heat this summer, it is going to be a little harder on livestock producers to keep their cattle hydrated. Kansas State University beef veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff is giving all the livestock producers a heads up by saying how much water cattle need. “The question always comes up, ‘how much water do these cattle need?’,” Tarpoff said. “And a good rule of thumb I like to work off of is whatever they’re consuming — dry matter intake — they need five times that in water.” Tarpoff said one of the most important parts of the extensive care needed…

Manhattan and Riley County are looking at the possibility of building a series of 18 dams around the county — two of which could be on Fort Riley land — that based on preliminary estimates could reduce peak flows on Wildcat Creek by 30 percent during a 100-year flood. According to Joe File of Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions, who conducted the feasibility study on the dams and presented at Thursday’s joint meeting between representatives from Manhattan and Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, the proposed detention and retention dams could provide flood control on approximately one-third of the nearly 100 square…
A federal bill that would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour across the United States passed in the House of Representatives Thursday, September 18, and now heads to the U.S. Senate. Kansas Congressmen Roger Marshall, Ron Estes and Steve Watkins opposed, and Kansas Congresswoman Sharice Davids supported it. The proposed legislation would bring the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 by 2025 through yearly steps. After…
