MANHATTAN — Warmer weather means a boom of activity, both outdoors and around town. There are several new businesses in the Manhattan area that the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce recently recognized during KMAN’s In Focus. Chamber President and CEO Jason Smith says many businesses around town are undergoing renovations, expansions or transitions in ownership. Smith also praised Pawnee Mental Health Services for its groundbreaking on the crisis stabilization center. MANHATTAN — A day of giving is taking place Monday as the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation holds its seventh annual Grow Green Match Day fundraiser The donations made through the foundation to 57 participating nonprofit endowed funds will receive a 50% match that can be used for their most crucial needs.The fundraiser runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Colony Square Office Complex Atrium located at 555 Poyntz Avenue. Members of the Riley City government presented a proposition to Riley County commissioners Thursday. Riley City Mayor Tim Sharp presented the idea for the city’s volunteer firefighters to use the same protocols as Riley County EMS.  Sharp says they have several volunteer firefighters who are also with the Manhattan Fire Department.  The means they have the training when it comes to responding to calls, but they cannot use it. 12b Lofts Apartments adjacent to the Bluemont Hotel are planning a 33-unit expansion. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to amend the site’s zoning and development plan to allow for the expansion. The addition, referred to as the 11b Lofts, would bring the unit total from 37 to 70. Three structures currently stand at the corner of Bluemont Avenue and 11th Street, where the redevelopment is planned. Two are unoccupied homes, the other is an occupied 12-unit apartment building. TOPEKA — Kansas officials have issued a new fiscal forecast that is a little more optimistic about how much tax revenue the state should expect to collect over the next two years. The slightly better projections released Thursday would give the state more budget room to expand Medicaid or provide modest income tax relief. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly urged the Republican-controlled Legislature to be cautious. She wants to expand Medicaid, while income tax relief is a priority for top Republican lawmakers. SALINA — Authorities say one person has been injured in an explosion at a Salina plant that makes vehicle batteries. Saline County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jim Hughes says the explosion was reported just before 6 a.m. Friday at Exide Technologies. He says he had no details about the reported injury or the cause of the explosion. A spokeswoman for Exide Technologies didn’t immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.
