A Manhattan woman was arrested over the weekend for DUI and child endangerment. The Riley County Police Department says 26-year-old Elizabeth Bennett was pulled over in the early morning hours Saturday in the 1300 block of Wreath Ave. after the report of a car hitting a parked car. Bennett, who reportedly intoxicated, was found to have children inside the vehicle at the time. She was arrested, but was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond.

35 wins, a school record 14 road victories and a third consecutive run to Saturday play at the Big 12 Tournament weren’t enough to land Kansas State a spot in the NCAA Baseball Tournament Sunday. Manhattan City Commissioners will hold a work session this evening at City Hall. The meeting will include an annual update on the pavement management of arterial, collector and local streets. A Manhattan man died while in custody Friday morning at the Riley County Jail, the second such incident in less than a month. According to the Riley County Police Department, 25-year-old Joseph Varvel was detained around 1:45 a.m. in the 300 block of North 14th Street for suspicious activity. While speaking with officers, RCPD says he ran and was later found in possession of cocaine. Officers on scene called for Riley County EMS assistance at 1:50 a.m. after Varvel complained of breathing issues while in custody. Pottawatomie County Commissioners will move forward on exploring potential designs of Excel and Harvest Roads to accommodate future growth in the Blue Township area. The decision follows a decision last week approving a resolution tied to a zoning change within the Willow Glen subdivision — to allow for development of more duplexes and four-plexes. A man accused in a 2020 shooting near Aggieville will stand trial this summer. Travell Hairston appeared in Riley County District Court Monday for a status conference. Hairston is charged with attempted first-degree murder from a Feb. 2020 incident in the 1100 block of Laramie. He’s accused of firing several rounds at a 27-year-old male victim. He also separately faces multiple charges of aggravated assault, stemming from a September 2019 house party where he allegedly fired a gun during a brawl.
