The City of Manhattan has agreed to lease up to 300 stalls in its downtown parking garage to HCW, the parent company of the Hilton Garden Inn. City commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved the agreement, which will remain in place through 2030. Assistant City Manager Jared Wasinger said HCW will pay the city $25 per reserved stall, which will generate approximately $6,000 monthly and $75,000 annually toward the city’s parking fund. “Ideally, we would like to use that money to invest into the downtown garage for those capital improvements that we’ve been discussing for the last couple years,” he said.…

Riley County Police have charged a Lawrence man on suspicion of forgery, making false information and theft. 40-year-old David Nelson, was arrested Tuesday on a Riley County District Court warrant at 2923 Nelson’s Landing in Manhattan. Nelson is charged with two counts of forgery, two counts of making false information, two counts of unlawful computer acts, theft and attempted theft. RCPD says the warrant stems from two incidents reported in April. Neson remaind jailed on a $30,000 bond. Click here for more local news.

By Ned Seaton The property tax rate paid by Manhattan residents again ranks in the middle of the pack for comparable Kansas cities, according to data obtained by The Manhattan Mercury. Manhattan’s rate — which combines the taxes levied by the city government, the county government and the local public school system — ranks 14th among the 26 so-called “first-class” cities in the state, according to a Mercury analysis of data from the League of Kansas Municipalities.
