Four Manhattan City Manager finalists have recently been identified. The search committee for a new City Manager has narrowed down the candidates to four finalists for the position, and they are all being invited to visit Manhattan later this month. The City will issue a news release once visit information has been finalized, including candidates’ names and plans for an upcoming opportunity for the public to interact with all of the candidates.

The Clay County Hospital Foundation recently announced that it is just over $50,000 away from achieving its planned fundraising goal of $3.8 million. This fundraising effort is to support the new expansion at Clay County Medical Center which is an ambitious project that includes the construction of a 6,765 square-foot addition, featuring a new mental health clinic. The foundation has already sold out all sponsorable rooms in the new mental health clinic and clinic addition. The foundation is also focused on raising an additional $300,000 to cover other essential equipment.
Manhattan commissioners passed a $16.98 million build agreement for CiCo Park improvements Tuesday night on a vote of four to one. The Department of Justice recently announced that Douglas Edward Robertson of Olathe, Kansas, the former vice president of “KanRus” Trading Company pleaded guilty Tuesday for his role in a conspiracy to circumvent U.S. export laws by filing false export forms with the U.S. government and continuing to sell and export controlled avionics equipment to customers in Russia without the required licenses from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Manhattan city commissioners are talking about laying off as many as 70 city employees as they consider cost-cutting measures to avert what they say is a potential budget crisis. City officials during Tuesday’s meeting weighed options to increase the general fund. The fund’s cash balance is expected to drop from $11 million to $6 million by the end of 2024. 31 year old Demetrius Salon Ivory Jr. of Ogden was arrested Thursday night on one count of aggravated battery: knowingly cause great bodily harm or disfigurement. He was arrested at the intersection of Riley Avenue and North Elm Street, and is still confined within the Riley County Jail on a $20,000 bond.

Updated 7/3/24: 1st Infantry Division Sergeant Elias Geary was selected as the Non-Commissioned Officer of the year for the 3rd Armored Corps. He had the highest individual point score of all participating soldiers. He also received the “Top Shot” award for his excellent marksmanship. The 1st Infantry Division team placed 4th out of 10. Geary County USD 475 Board of Education recently approved the hiring of Bryan Scruggs, Marlies Gipson and Kenny Upham to principal positions within the district on Tuesday morning. Scruggs will take over as principal at the Early Childhood Center during the 2024-25 school year. He brings a wealth experience to his new role as he is currently an instructional coach and academic specialist at Seitz Elementary. He also taught kindergarten at Ware Elementary from 2005 through 2021. The Manhattan City Commission on Tuesday heard budget requests from outside agencies after changing their work session into a special meeting. RCPD Director Brian Peete updated the commission on the City’s financial burden for 2025. The police board oversees the Riley County Police Department, which is jointly run by the city and county governments. The budget was set on June 17th by the board, the city and county governments are required to fund it. The city pays 80% of the budget and the county pays 20%.
