A potential roundabout on Anderson Avenue near the Unger Complex continues to be a hot-button topic. Mayor Karen McCulloh, who joined Within Reason with Mike Matson on KMAN earlier this month, said she intends to listen to the engineers’ recommendations on how to potentially make the intersection safer. “The first time I was on the city commission, my final last was to put a roundabout at North Manhattan and Kimball Avenue, and we’ve had two traffic fatalities there,” she said. “The roundabout would have been $1 million cheaper. Strong winds over the next 48 hours are prompting more concerns over the fire danger in the region. Riley County Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell said the dust that was kicked up last weekend is a good indicator of how dry it is right now… “We were very fortunate last fall and last spring, after the fire season we had a bunch of moisture and good growth. But now that that’s turned off,” he said. “It’s just extreme now where we’ve got a very high fuel load and we haven’t had any moisture recently. Things are drying up very quick.”…

Riley County Police Department Director Brian Peete told the Riley County Law Board Monday that his officers answered 503 calls on March 8, down 30 from the previous year. “The five-year average for calls for service is 435.6. We were up a little bit, but we’ve decreased 5.6 percent in calls for service,” he said. Peete said the majority of issues officers encountered were not from Manhattan residents or K-State students. Kansans could soon have a say in who sits on the state Supreme Court. Area legislators discussed Senate Concurrent Resolution 1611 during Saturday’s legislative coffee, hosted by the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce. The resolution advanced by a narrow margin in the Senate earlier this month. If adopted by the full legislature, the measure would put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in August 2026 to replace the current, merit-based selection of justices with direct elections.
