Benefits of adopting a pet from the animal shelter

0
By KMAN Staff on January 13, 2020 Local News, Manhattan

If you are considering bringing a new animal into your family, one route to consider is pet adoption.

Alyssa Comroe, a clinical assistant-professor of shelter medicine at K-State, says that when you adopt an animal, you are potentially saving multiple lives.

She also says adoption through a shelter can be cheaper than going through a breeder.

Another aspect to consider when looking for a pet is the importance of finding an animal that is right for your family or living situation.

Comroe says adopting through an animal shelter can make this decision easier.

She also says some shelters will let you do test runs with animals.

Now, assuming you haven’t already been inspired to sprint down to the animal shelter and adopt a pet before reaching this point in the article, there are some things to consider before taking the next step.

Comroe says you should make sure you have the resources to care for an animal and that the rest of your family also wants a pet before adopting.

According to Comroe, once the adoption is done, you should consider taking your pet to a veterinarian even though it has likely already been spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated by the shelter.
