Flint Hills Breadbasket finishes distributing Christmas baskets; remains in need of donations

The Flint Hills Breadbasket just wrapped up distributing about 180 Christmas baskets to local families earlier this week.

The Christmas baskets helped provide food items needed for a Christmas meal to area families.

Director Maribeth Kieffer says the weather made work a little difficult, but overall the event was a success.

Those interested in receiving a basket next year just need to go to the Flint Hills Bread Basket, pre-qualify and sign-up.

Despite likely being done with donation events for the next couple months, the Flint Hills Breadbasket is in need of donations throughout the year.

There is a particular need for food donations in the summer since students who typically receive free or price-reduced lunches at school are home during those months.

Some of the food items typically needed are shelf-stable juice in a bottle, canned meat, canned fruit, peanut butter and grape jelly.

Kieffer says monetary donations are also welcome, especially with recent tax laws.

Monetary donations can be made in person at 905 Yuma St. or online at flinthillsbreadbasket.org.

Volunteers are also welcome, although those wanting help out are encouraged to be flexible with their time since the amount of work available can change in just a few hours.

Those with questions about donating can contact the Flint Hills Breadbasket at 785-537-0730.
