The Manhattan Fire Department battled a residential blaze Tuesday afternoon.

At 3:31 p.m. the MFD was dispatched to 2501 Meadowood Drive for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a one-story residential structure with smoke showing. Crews were able to locate and extinguished a fire in the basement within 20 minutes of arriving on scene. A total of 16 firefighters responded on six fire apparatus.

Investigators with Riley County Police Department and MFD determined Wednesday morning the cause for the fire was incendiary.

There were two occupants home at the time of the fire and both occupants were able to exit the structure as crews were arriving. One individual was treated and transported from the scene by Riley County EMS.

Loss is estimated at $20,000 to contents and $15,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Ronald and Laura Thornton of Manhattan.
