Local emergency services take part in statewide tornado drill

Emergency services in Pottawatomie County and Riley County took part in a statewide tornado drill put on by the National Weather Service Tuesday.

The drills were part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which also includes days devoted to preparedness, lightning safety, hail and wind safety and flood safety.

Riley County Emergency Management Coordinator Laurie Harrison says this drill, along with the tornado drills the county puts on each month, helps prepare both emergency services and residents for tornado season.

In addition to tornado sirens, Riley County residents who are signed up for the Everbridge emergency notification system also received notifications about the drill.

Harrison says even though the entire state took part in the drill, it was nothing new for her department and early signs indicate it was a success.
