The Manhattan Fire Department reminds residents of when fireworks can be discharged and some safety tips to observe within the city limits, ahead of Independence Day.
Discharge is allowed from 8 a.m. to midnight July 1 through July 4. Fireworks sales are allowed from noon July 1 through midnight July 4. It is unlawful to discharge fireworks in streets, alleys, parks or on public property. It is unlawful to throw or shoot fireworks in the direction of people or vehicles. It is also against the law to ignite aerial luminaries, sky lanterns or floating lanterns. Bottle rockets and M80s are also against the law in Kansas.
The Fire Department says in 2018, 175 fireworks related injuries were recorded in Kansas that required a trip to the emergency room. Most of the incidents typically involve children and teens. For more information on fireworks safety, visit cityofmhk.com/fireworks.
