The deadline for the art and writing contest held by Manhattan’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Committee is nearing.
Every year during their MLK celebration, the Manhattan MLK Committee holds an art and writing contest for K-12 students. Rachel Shivers, committee secretary, says the contest is one of the premiere parts of the community celebration where the community gets to see what is in the hearts and minds of the young people in terms of diversity and inclusion. Committee member, Paulicia Williams, says each year there is a different theme for the contest.
“The theme this year is ‘What is in your life’s blueprint?’, and that is taken from a quote by Dr. King,” Williams says. ” Basically it says, ‘Each of us is an architect faced with the task of drawing a blueprint for the building of our lives. What is in your life’s blueprint?’.”

Williams adds that each age category winner for the art and writing contest will be awarded with a cash prize. She tells KMAN a little more about what they are looking for in an entry.
“They could be art, whether it’s performance art or visual art. So if someone wants to express themselves with dancing or in poem or song. We also accept those submissions as well as 3-D art, and also, of course, writing.”
The deadline for submissions for the art and writing contest as well as nominations for the spirit award have been extended to Saturday December 19th. To find more information about both contests, visit mhk-mlk.org.
