The Pottawatomie County Commission extended a Proclamation of a State of Local Disaster Emergency by 30 days in a meeting Monday.

A proclamation was signed last week in response to damage caused by late-summer rain and flooding, such as multiple sinkholes located at Hayes Drive in Manhattan.

Emergency management coordinator Jennifer Merrow provided updates to the commission on these sinkholes.

Merrow also provided information on the Kansas River stream advisory that was issued last Friday.

Once water samples show the water is safe, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will lift the advisory.

Until that happens, Merrow says it is advised that the contaminated area should be avoided.

Public Works director Peter Clark gave an update on the Calhoun Road bridge project.

While bids were recently submitted by three companies to take on the project, Clark recommended rejecting the bids since the price estimates they submitted were too high.

The commission will look at alternative bids later in October with the intention of receiving lower price estimates.

Other topics addressed during the meeting included discussion on maintaining or replacing a transfer station scale as well as updates from the county treasurer, the county appraiser, the county attorney and the Emergency Medical Services director.

The county commission’s next meeting will be Monday at 8:30 a.m..
