Fleet Maintenance Facility
Although the final design and specifications for Pottawatomie County’s new Public Works Fleet Maintenance Facility have been completed, approval from the county commission will have to wait at least one more week.
“Commissioner (Pat) Weixelman asked a question about one of the particular pieces of the design relative to the wall design,” Peter Clark, the director of the public works department, said. “It has a CMU wall sitting on a slab foundation with a trench footing underneath that and he wanted some more detail about how the vapor barrier would work, specifically in that wall system so that it would keep thermal penetration and keep the condensation from happening inside the building.”
Commissioner Weixelman also asked for information on the capital-improvement-plan balance and end-of-year projections on transfers that could provide more funding for the project.
The commission decided to move $300,000 to the Capital Improvement Plan fund from the Road and Bridge Equipment fund and to keep $600,000 in the public works equipment reserve.

Limerick-Ln.-extension roadblock
An alternative part of the Limerick Ln. extension that would connect Limerick Lane to Excel Rd., officials also want to build a portion of what will eventually be the Wam-Sag-Man Trail that extends from Manhattan to Wamego.
Public Works director Peter Clark says this part of the project is to be funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation and the developer, but is now encountering a road block.
“The project ended up being higher than the two identified funding sources had initially budgeted,” Clark said. “So we are going to go back and talk to KDOT to see if they are going to be willing to put a little bit more money to helping fund the trail.”
The commission was also concerned about a key part of the trail.
“The commissioners also had concerns about the long-term maintenance of the trail and who would be taking that on,” Clark said. “So we’re going to look into some information that would help the commissioners with that question.”

Pottawatomie County’s Sheriff
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat will officially retire on Nov. 30th about three weeks after being selected as commissioner Travis Altenhofen’s successor.
This will also be the same day that the new sheriff gets sworn into office.
The meeting to decide who the new sheriff will be will take place tonight at 6:30 in the Judicial Center in Westmoreland at 108 N. 1st St..
While the meeting will only involve the 26 Republican Party precinct leaders in attendance, it is open to the public.
