Update: Pedestrian killed on HWY 24 identified

    Updated: Monday, 10:29 a.m.

Authorities have released more information regarding a fatality accident early Friday morning on Highway 24 in Manhattan, where a homeless man was killed crossing the highway in the area near Academy Sports at 401 E. Poyntz Ave.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the deceased as 56-year-old George Lott of Springfield, Missouri. The driver was identified as 35-year-old Justin Bolt of Circle, Kansas.

According to Lt. Greg Harkrader of the Kansas Highway Patrol Friday, two homeless men were crossing the highway in the area just after midnight Friday morning. The duo crossed in front of an eastbound vehicle. Bolt, who was driving a 2018 Chevy Silverado, hit his brakes and swerved to miss them, but struck Lott.

Traffic there was delayed and re-routed the rest of the night and into Friday morning.

Lott’s identity was not immediately released. Harkrader said Friday investigators were still working the case and attempting to notify next of kin — which, he added, is often a challenge with homeless individuals. The other man crossing the street with Lott was not identified by KHP.
