Both caucus sites in Manhattan reported higher-than-anticipated turnouts Saturday as Democratic and Republican voters picked their preferred candidates for president.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was the choice at Anthony Middle School in Manhattan, besting former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 1,078 to 517 for the Democratic nod.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the choice of Riley County Republicans with 624 votes. Ohio Gov. John Kasich was second with 352 votes.
Both Sanders and Cruz dominated the state overall.
Riley County GOP chair Eileen King said she had to print out 600 more ballots to meet demand at Manhattan High School’s West Campus while Riley County Democratic Party chair Michael Gassman said numbers were double what were expected there.
And that was with both King and Gassman optimistic about a high turnout before Saturday.
